EPA estimates are based on use of recommended gas, which is 87 octane for both engines. Using premium fuel will not appreciably affect economy. It takes a certain amount of horsepower to accelerate the car at a given rate, or to keep the car rolling at a given speed. It takes a certain amount of fuel to create a given amount of horsepower, and the engine won't care if it's burning 87 or 93 octane to create it. All premium fuel does is allow enough timing advance that the engine can make MORE horsepower, over and above what can be produced using regular fuel. And when you make that additional horsepower you'll burn more fuel to do it; there's no such thing as a free lunch.

All other things being equal, your car will not get better mileage cruising at 70 mph with premium fuel. Wind direction and speed will have a far greater impact on economy than fuel octane. With the CARB rules that were in effect when the Mustang EcoBoost was first introduced, if it were possible to get better economy using premium Ford would have recommended it's use.

Right ,, there will always be variables that must be considered in the eqatioms . U:cheers:

All of these equations seem to be off task . There will be differences with the real numbers and these equations are not individual quantities ..
Reads as though they would be formulated for the laws of averages and not drawn from gallons used divided from actual mileages .
Unfortunately, averages were used since it's impossible to account for all the different driving styles, highway vs. city driving, distance per drive, climate, etc. But this should give a rough estimate of the difference in cost for using regular vs. premium gas.

Took me a while to come up with a response , plus it seems to be too quiet in this forum .

I gather that I am paying more per year to run 93 octane and a GT owner gets less MPG s than me . So why did I think that I would be doing OK in terms of costs to run a 4 banger instead of a V8 ? I Should of got the V8 base and Modded it .

My 2000.00 mile round trips averaging 36 MPG on 93 oct. Just don't equate to saving $$

Interesting. You’d give up your 201A? I guess quite a few did have to make that choice to get into a GT. Don’t think I would though.

Thinking about it now all I really wanted was Nav. As it stands I have spent enough on upgrades that there is no easy answer . I enjoy the ecoboost as is and will probably justify my decision with plenty of years of service .

2,000 miles Ă· 36 MPG = 55.5 gallons. 55.5 x $3.09/gallon (premium in St Louis) = $171.65
2,000 miles Ă· 25 MPG = 80 gallons. 80 x $2.69/gallon (regular in St Louis) = $215.20

That results in a savings of $43.58. Plus, you get the added benefit of using less of the earth's natural resources and generating fewer pollutants.

For me it works out to $1050/ year savings in fuel driving an ecoboost based on my typical 20k per year miles. This is based on my actual 28 mpg I get and the 17 a guy I work with gets with his GT with both of us driving in similar traffic day in and day out. Not to mention the $7000 more you pay for a GT along with the interest on that 7k. Might as well add in the additional insurance premium for a GT.

You are easily looking at $2500 in savings per year with an Ecoboost.

As much as it would be fun to say I have a GT or a Hellcat or a 1LE it just doesn't make financial sense for a daily driver that you put 20k miles on in a year. Plus I am fortunate enough to have 68 Plymouth Barracuda in the garage that I can take out anytime I feel the need to scare women and make small children cry. Plus it sounds better than any Coyote could ever hope to.

You cannot even imagine of the savings you get with an EcoBoost over a GT in some other countries. To give you an example, I save almost €5000 a year and that’s just tax, without taking into account savings on gas

Whenever I feel the need for speed I hop on the S1000XR. Acceleration is breathtaking when you only have to move 3 lbs per horsepower, and the exhaust sounds pretty good up around 11k. Best of all, the difference in price between a similarly equipped EcoBoost and GT just about paid for the bike (I bought it used).
