eBrake handle or cable?

pulled it up the other day, somethin broke and it wouldnt engage, is there any reason I should suspect the handle to have broken instead of the cable?? I haven't been able to get into it and check, hoping to this eve at some point, which is the best one to start with?

Seems like the easiest place to start would be a quick peek under the car to check the cable and its connections. Otherwise you're pulling the center console apart...
