EB oil/transmission fluid change question

How many miles are you all waiting to change oil? Dealer told me 7500.

Have any of you converted to all synthetic? Thoughts on doing this?


I hear a slight 'thud' when engaging into first gear, and my shift from 1st to 2nd is somewhat 'notchy'.
Do you recommend changing to a different manual transmission fluid?

I change every 5,000 if I'm just daily driving it. I change it every 3,000 miles if I'm tracking it or driving it harder.

I'd say that 99% of us are running synthetic oil. There's no negatives to it other than maybe the price.

1st to 2nd being notchy is just a characteristic of the MT-82 transmission. There's a variety of ways to help resolve this. Search on that one. It seems like there was a recent post about it. I have an auto, so I don't keep up with it much.

Lots of transmission braces and shifters that are supposed to help with that issue

I just had my first oil change @3k and I asked the Ford service rep which oil is recommended and he said a synthetic blend. I pressed him on the full synthetic and he said the blend was recommended so I went with the blend.

Transmission fluid won't fix the thud or the 1st to 2nd 'pop'. If you read through the 'MT-82 Thud' thread in the transmission section you will learn that "The thud comes from the spinning first gear synchronizer assembly and input shaft complete with clutch plate being suddenly halted by engagement with the gearcluster." That should've ended the thud thread right there but nobody read it and it went on forever.

And the 1st -2nd issue is from the flywheel not getting enough revs. Its heavy and likes revs before engaging. Once in a while depending on how slowly I'm putting along, I'll even re-gas the throttle before letting the clutch out for 2nd gear. A nice fluid change will help with overall smoothness though.

This motor is tough on some engine oils. I wouldn't go more than 5000 miles on a change. I run E30 and change mine at 3000.
