i know higgs is knowledgeable, i have sent him a pm asking about the thermostat thingy. so can you explain to us regular joes how it works then? i am here to learn also. why would a regular joe that has a gauge that says things on that gauge need to know his idle afr and what afr it should be sitting at, at idle? i only ever paid attention to my wot afrs because my engine doesnt go boom at idle...well in theory it can if things happen to things and some more things...but it wont...

In a very short explanation...

Your car is always hunting for a stoich A/F ratio at idle and cruise. Just like your car hunts to hit a target A/F at WOT, part throttle, etc.
If your asking... and I think you are, the reason most are watching the idle / cruise AF is for the FF E85 tune. If your base tune is spot on, then by knowing the values of your AF on E85 you can determine the alky% of your gas. Your factory O2s are used to determine this. That's that "magic" of the FF tune.

Higgs is very knowledgeable on the exacts to the .03836362 of everything lol. Hopefully he'll chime in for you if I didn't answer what you're looking for.

yes you are right, your AFR (or better yet, lambda) at idle and part throttle (along with fuel trims) represent your airflow and fueling picture the rest of the tune is based on. if it is off at idle and part throttle then it's going to be off at WOT and sometimes you don't exactly want to go WOT to find out.....

(insert 45 more minutes of typing here, sorry feeling lazy this am)
