Drag radial width

So knowing that DR's are going to hook up so much better than a stock tire, what width is actually necessary to still hook up. My thinking is the narrowest lightest tire/wheel combo that will still provide enough grip would be ideal. I just don't have any experience with DR's and don't want to jump on the "Wider is always better" bandwagon.

If u have the 17 inch wheel m/t makes a 275/40/17 et drag radial.Ive seen guys run 10,s with that tire.U would be very happy with that drag radial.

Appreciate the info Tommy. I've never had any desire to run at the strip before this car. But now that's all changed. It's not the first Mustang I've owned either. Go figure.

That being said although I know how to drive fairly well I'm entering a world of unknowns and it's the little things that can often make so much difference.

No problem man,and ur right when it comes to the 1/4 mile all the little things count so much,and them eco,s have some nice torque so u need a good tire.Once u go ur hooked,u have been warned lol!!!!!!.

Just picked up M/T DRS today my rims are 18x8 so I was limited on size, I want to run the stock rims for now.245/40/18 = 26x10 Hopefully I can try them at the track this weekend been at the track twice already on the stock tires time to step it up, tune and exhaust coming soon.

I did the same tire .. Worked good at the track ... I'm selling mine and going with RT-S Weld wheels 17 by 10 with a bigger DR .. 295/45/17

I went about a month ago and yes I'm hooked. My co-worker has a WRX and we went. Well I couldn't hook it up well enough and he won't quit running his mouth so I've got some incentive. Plus I just had a good time.
Surprising how evenly matched the EB and WRX stock for stock are except from a dig.

To maximize contact patch, it's not just the width of the drag radial to consider, it's also the length of the contact patch which is increased with a larger diameter tire. A 28" tall drag radial will offer more contact patch than a 26" tall drag radial, even when both are the same exact width.

As the current transmissions have such steep gearing, a taller drag radial is a better choice for most modern Mustangs.

Yea well i bet he wont be talking much when u put drag radails on,he has a big advantage from a dig,he has all wheel drive.Story changes when u add drag radials.

Absolutely correct and im looking to get at least a 28 tall radial just for that reason,if it was not for raising my limiter i would be shifting into 5th in the 1/4.

Yes a 28 tall would be better but I`m working with the stock 18x8 rims and the only DR that would fit 18x8 rim was the M/T 245/40/18 but it did help with my 3.15 gear last night at the track. Later will be doing drag wheels and gear change then many more sizes with a wider rim to pick from.:clap2:
