I can’t find anything about this anywhere to I’ve come here to try and figure it out.

I have a 68,xxx mile 2016 GT/CS with the select shift 6 speed auto which comes from the factory with rev matching.

To engage the rev matching, you have to go into sport/sport plus, and the engine will automatically rev match as you come to a stop. To the best of my understanding, whenever you use this feature, the engine will use the pistons and the natural friction of the air to slow the car down, which takes strain off the transmission and other driveline bits.

In my vehicle, when I use this feature, I hear a sound that I describe as teeth chattering reflecting off cars and buildings every single time I come to a stop. Driving through neighborhoods it’s frankly embarrassing and sounds like something is broken in the engine.

What’s peculiar is that the sound goes away when not using the engine braking feature after a rev match.

The foreman at the local dealer took the car for a drive and said he doesn’t think anything is wrong with it. FWIW it was CPO and has full warranty and Powertrain Warranty bought 5k miles ago.

My question to you guys is do you think this is normal behavior or is there something wrong with my car?

Is that video meant to provide auditory information for people to help you with? If so, I hear nothing.

You believe that if you engine break, you're taking strain off the transmission and other driveline bits?

No, you're doing the exact opposite.

It's fine, no problem to continue doing it, but you're doing the exact opposite. You're slowing the vehicle by using the compression of the engine, and that force is applied right through the transmission and other driveline bits to the rear wheels.

Just like when you're accelerating, but in reverse.

I can hear it. Sounds like something is rattling. Did you go with the tech on the test drive?

They wouldn’t let me take a tech out and the foreman couldn’t be found either. I couldn’t stick around because I had to get to work but I will be asking to talk directly to the foreman about it when I pick it up

I generally don't let the techs drive my cars alone. Never been refused a ride-along.

OK, where to begin. NoVaGT is right. Cannot really hear anything. Certainly do not hear anything transmission related.

All automatics have rev matching. It's part of its being "automatic". Switching drive modes changes the ECU mapping of the engine and transmission. Tightening up you could say. Rev's hold longer both up and down. So just forget the whole rev matching thing and just drive your car. You're not going to wear anything out if you let the transmission just do its thing. Now if you're shifting using your paddles and drop down to first gear at 50 MPH that's another matter.

At 68k miles I wouldn't be too concerned. If you are take it to another dealer or an independent mechanic. If they cannot find anything, turn up the radio.

I appreciate the advice, I’m still learning a lot about cars and this platform specifically.. this is my first stang!

It sounds to me like something in the engine is tapping something else during engine braking, I’m not necessarily concerned with the trans.

And on the dealer, I agree! Hard to find a good Ford dealer these days. I will make sure I drive it with them at some point.

First off, welcome Sam to Mustang's and M6G. As you already know Mustangs are fantastic cars. That said they do have their fair share of issues. They are not always the quietest cars and can have an assortment of mechanical noises. That big V8 under the hood can make some weird sounding ones from time to time. Anyway, have it checked again. If it gets a clean bill of health, get it in writing. Then relax and enjoy the ride.

I can hear it towards the end when he passed the parked vehicle and the sound reflects off of that. No, I would not say that is normal and I would be worried.

If I worried about every tick, clank, rattle and clunk my mustang made I'd go insane...
