Does cold weather effect back up camera?

Is anyone else having problems with their back up camera in this cold weather? Since the temp has dropped below 10 degrees, my camera is really dark when you first shift into reverse then I get the message that my camera is not available. It sometimes clears up after I turn the car off and then restart it.

No, it s very cold here in Canada, and i have also a convertible. May be you want to have the cable connection checked, because mine was broken totally, and i had no more camera connection. But before it happens i have had sometimes the same problem as you.
It s a known weakness, because the cable is a little free in the trunk, so you can squeeze it.

The backup camera on my wife's escape gave the same "not available" message about a year ago when it was around 15 degrees out. Once the care warmed up it started working again. No problems since then.

My 15 went through 3 winters and my 17 is on it's first winter. The cars have seen sub zero temps and never had any unusual behavior form the camera.

Yes as an engineer that test cameras in all temperature conditions, when it get's cold, the sensor will become less sensitive to light so you will see darker images.
But your situation seems like the camera image board is just out of spec.

Failed and/or intermittent functioning of the back-up camera** is anomalous irrespective of temperature.

Temperature notwithstanding, a once-only glitch that is solved by rebooting the car is one thing, but if it fails and then "heals itself" -- or fails intermittently -- something is wrong electrically and needs to be checked. "Cold" does not affect electronics in this manner under normal operation. If there are flawed components, or trauma, or liquids, or damage to related/connected/dependent components...sure. But pure cold - in the absence of those other variables - no.

** There are various other devices/systems to which this could apply...but every case is unique. I am comfortable with the notion that rebooting the car solves some things. And if the issue never returns...I can still sleep easy. But some sort of evaluation/assessment/examination must always occur.
