That's because your phone uses cellular data (or wifi at home, if you plug in your destination before you leave) to get updated maps every time you use it. Exactly why I didn't get the Nav option on my order.

Does anyone know if there is an HDMI port for the 8 inch screen? If there is, it would be possibly to display an iphone, ipad, or any tablet/android on the screen.

I highly doubt that, but there is either a picture or video somewhere on here showing one of the old-style composite video inputs in the center console. 1 yellow RCA input.

I guarantee there is a way to get the display of a tablet or smartphone up on the screen. I will figure it out and post a complete how to on here as soon as I receive my car. I am a Network engineer, stuff like this is my hobby and job, so I will definitely figure out some way to do it.

I think it could probably be done with the MFT Lockpick: https://www.coastaletech.com/mytouch.htm

Would like to see something like that work in the Mustang. But I have doubts it would.

For simply displaying the map data on screen, the Lockpick solution I posted above may be the most straightforward. I plan to get one of them regardless, if only for the ability to have a front mounted parking camera.

I plan on figuring out a way to mount a portable garmin in front of the 8 inch screen when I need it. I think people just thought nav screens were cool. We have them now with mft.

Maybe I'm just having a hard time picturing your intended solution, but if you do that, won't you lose access to the other functions available on the MFT screen?

For me, the goal is to have the benefit of an 'always connected' device like my phone displayed on the MFT screen, so I don't have to mount anything.

Did you really say that your phone has to be able to see the sky? WTH are you talking about? GPS works on cell phones in a block dungeon with a cement ceiling...
If you've never gotten the "Satellite Connection Lost" notification from your phone while you're driving, you're a luckier man than I am. I got it four times in one half-hour trip last week.

Yup, in a big city, tall buildings and other obstacles can definitely affect the signal. Inside a building, things get extra dicey. At the very least the accuracy of the fix is impacted, but more than likely the signal will be lost altogether.

Anyone that claims they are getting a fix inside a solid concrete structure is almost certainly getting it from somewhere other than the GPS satellites... e.g. WiFi hotspots or cellular triangulation, which IIRC is actually the only form of location service earlier iPhones had.

I have a large screen GPS unit that I hang on my present car's dash. I brought it with, when I visited the factory rep S550. I was trying to decide if I was going to add NAV to my order. The 'portable' unit looked like crap hanging on the dash of the elegant interior. Putting it on top of the dash blocked a good portion the front right side view. The car had the NAV screen. There was no comparison. The resolution on the NAV screen was as good as my sister's Lexus.
I don't trust my cellphone's nav feature. It's too small for me to really see the maps while I'm driving, and most of the time I have the radio on...no muting between the phone and the radio for audio directions.
So I am getting NAV on the premium order, 5 years of map and traffic updates.
