The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued "voluntary" guidelines for auto manufacturers to limit driver distraction. They were made voluntary because technology is constantly changing.Ummm I don't think its "govt mandated" I think its "Ford Lawyers Mandated" otherwise your phone would lock when it sensed you moving too...
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) adopted these guidelines as a mandatory requirement, and other non-member manufacturers have adopted them, as well. Ford belongs to AAM.
You're correct that "Ford's Lawyers Mandated" is more accurate than "Government Mandated," but Ford had to choose between customer satisfaction and its AAM accreditation. I don't blame them because I would definitely go after them if my family member died in an accident caused by their decision not to implement a government safety guideline.
I don't see any guidelines from the NHTSA regarding safe driving speeds for convertible top operation.
On a personal note, I don't have navigation in either of my cars, so the features I can't use while driving are minimal. However, if I paid the extra $750 ($2,500 for my wife's Highlander) to add navigation that I could only use in a parking lot, I would be...
