Difference in MPG

Hi folks! I've been looking to purchase a used 2015 mustang pretty soon and I'm having trouble deciding between the ecoboost or the gt platform. I drive a lot for work and school so the gas mileage is a factor in my decision. Now I know the ecoboost platform will have better gas mileage, but I was wondering how much of a difference it is. I current drive a f150 ecoboost that gets 11.9mpg, so I'm assuming they both do better than that. I'm not afraid of tuning or installing a cold air intake on either platforms if it benefits me in fuel economy. So presuming I drive like a grandma, what is the difference in mpg between the two (tuned and untuned) and what gear ratio is best for gas mileage?

My car is still too new to really tell, but I've been averaging close to 20 in my GT this tank. I've only got 1k miles on the car, but my gas mileage has been improving slightly with each fill up. In my old 2011GT I used to average 21-22mpg, and that was a brembo car, very similar to the PP on my 16.

I have a 2015 EcoBoost Premium automatic, I drive about 20 miles each day, majority of that being highway around 70MPH, occasional bursts here and there, getting on the on ramps, etc. and sport + mode maybe once or twice a week, I'm seeing 28 MPG using 93 octane fuel, and when I cruise on the highway for a 2 or 3 hour drive I get 30-32 MPG. I am completely stock also.

I had a non-pp 2016 EB for 3 months.

I found I got around 28 on my work commute (mix of highway and city) with regular driving habits. Driving like grandma around 32. Really heavy footed aggressive accelerator I got 21.

On my 2016 PP GT I get around 21 regular driving on the same route. If I drive like grandma up to 26. Really heavy footed aggressive accelerator I get 14-15.

Its roughly 6-8 mpg difference. The best on long highway trips on the EB was like 34 MPG. Best on long highway trips so far on my GT is 28.

While gas mileage is better in the EB, If you enjoy spirited driving I recommend getting a gt, it doesn't need a tune. The EB does, as well as needing at least an aftermarket Intercooler.

My wife gets 25 commuting to work 20 miles each way in an EB w/ PP Auto in mixed driving.

I generally get roughly 20mpg in my GT/PP with mixed driving.

Keep in mind this reviewer is the king of squeezing every possible MPG out of a car. But this is a good MPG comparison between the Ecoboost and the GT Mustangs. He does exactly the same test on both cars. The Ecoboost Mustang is clearly the winner by a pretty good margin.

Recently went on a cruise (LA to Monterey and back), averaged 22.1

Please note that your rear gear ratio (and thus your highway mileage) will vary depending on which transmission you choose and whether you go with the performance package (PP) or not. There are a bunch of different combinations.

IIRC the rear gear ratios are:
- automatic transmissions (non-PP): 3.15
- manual transmission (non-PP): 3.31 (can be changed to 3.55 on GT)
- manual transmission ecoboost performance pack (not sure about AT): 3.55
- manual transmission GT performance pack: 3.73 (torsen rear-end)

Also, I have an ecoboost with MT and PP and I have been getting around 23 mpg in mixed driving.

I work in a rural area full of 50mph and 55mph highways and back-roads with Amish buggies. On two days with the exact 80 mile routes: I got 19.1mpg fully stock then took the exact route with an AirAid and got 23.8mpg. I reset MPG at the beginning of both days. The addition of a Gibson CBE produced zero change on another day after these, but I have yet to get a tune. I generally drive 5mph over the speed limit but dead-on the limit in slow zones: neighborhoods, schools, etc. but I do launch hard on occasion.

Are you looking for manual or automatic? I drive manual cars and was on the fence between the two and then did test drives. I don't know if the issue was turbo lag but the EB engine didn't seem to be responsive when I was trying to rev-match on downshifts. On the other hand the GT was super sweet. We are expecting a GT in early October.

I will be looking to see what can be done for gas mileage on the daily commute when I get my GT. I will have the 3.73 diff and wondering if starting in 2nd gear might improve gas mileage. I assume this car could easily start in 2nd gear. Thoughts?

My Base GT PP has been getting 16-18 mpg 100% around town driving and if I hit the highway at all during a tank its usually 19-22 mpg. I havnt had a 100% highway tank yet (will next weekend!!!) but so far Im actually quite happy with it. I dont hypermile, and I punch on it whenever I feel but for normal everyday driving I shift before 2500 and hit 6th on speeds over 45mph usually. I imagine itll all go down when it gets cold out as well.

You still see the Amish around all the time? You must be in St. Mary's somewhere. I don't see nearly as many of them as I used too.
