You said +/- a couple degrees. Dr. Norts says the gap between the thermostat is open and fans come on is 15-16*. That's 15-16* constantly varying as "stable".Well I'd argue that you're at the stable point if you've gone into the cyclic on-off of the fans. My example was applicable mainly to highway, as it's keeping variables constant or of very minimal change (let's assume constant speed and relatively flat ground...load will be constant, as will airflow, so heat rejection to the coolant will stabilize). The fan won't be on then either.
I'm sure turning the fans on earlier on a stock thermostat will also bring the avg temp and stabilized temp down for most normal/easy driving, autoX and drag race staging, etc... A lower stat on top of that will further bring it down under those conditions.
So cruising on the HWY at 180* instead of 190* (assuming 180* isn't too cold to hurt power), you'll potentially be able to make more power on a hwy pull until the temps climb to 190* where the stock statement would have you at anyway.
Still seems mostly pointless unless you're trying to really stretch your tune for hey, drag, and autoX races.
I'd like to see some dynos of varying CHTs
