I've got a 2017 mustang GT - and its making a really irritating creaking noise from the backseat whenever im driving stopping or starting or driving slowly over a bump.

The noise seems to go away if somebody is sitting in the rear seat.

I took it to the dealer and they said it was because the spare tire holder was loose and the seats weren't latched all the way (i had already checked both of those, and tried removing the spare tire holder altogether. They didn't even drive the car - it started creaking right in their parking lot as i was leaving, but i didnt have the time to take it back).

Before I take it to another dealer that hopefully has a clue what they are doing, has anyone else had something like this and is there anything else i can look at?

Outside of the car - reach into and under each of your rear wheel wells. Feel around for (or using a flashlight) look for the black plastic "nubs". These are the wheel well liner retainers. If they are loose it allows the wheel well liners to flex or move around against the body.

Turn them clockwise to tighten. Do not over tighten them, just turn them until it feels like it's going to stop turning. Do this to each retainer on both sides. Then go take a drive, see if the creaking noises stopped or subsided.

Some other areas to check:

1) Passenger side rear inside trunk, behind the trunk liner. There is an electronic module affixed to a very think piece of sheet metal. Depending on road surfaces, drivetrain characteristics and length of time driving - the sheet metal can or will vibrate, which causes an f'n annoying sound that sounds like creaking metal or like something is bouncing against plastic or metal. Either relocate the module OR buffer it using felt/rubber in between it and the metal.

2) Rear trunk lid. Check to make sure trunk lid is not making contact with the tops of the tail lights OR top of bumper cover. This too can create an annoying noise.

3) Under rear bumper cover there is an absorber - if it's making contact with the bumper cover it will create obnoxious noises as well when driving.

4) Rear cradle or subframe. Check all mounting points of all the parts that are attached to it and make sure everything is torqued to spec (this can be done on your own, or have the Dealer do it).

Thanks so much for all the info - I checked all the above and still couldn't find the noise, so I went ahead and took it to the second dealer.

The first thing they told me when I walked in is that there was a service advisory on this exact issue, and they needed to take some stuff apart and adjust some things. Got the car back this morning, work order said they adjusted the right rear shock, and the creak is totally gone. Totally covered under warranty.

Looks like the first dealer just didn't feel like dealing with it, so they kept my car for a day, wasted my time, lied to me about diagnosing it and just sent me on my way. Guess where I'm not going back to for service...

Interesting, so the noise and repair was external? Any part numbers noted on your repair order?

Nope - it just said adjusted R/R shock. Maybe something was rubbing on something, or something wasn't tightened all the way. Didn't notice any difference at all in how the car drives before or after.
