Can any of the experts here confirm if Ford changed the Gen 3 crank position sensor to a 3 wire hall effect from the 2 wire reluctor used on the Gen 1 and Gen 2 engines?
It appears that ‘11-‘24 all use the same updated sensor, based on this info. from MMR’s website. I have a 2019 and replaced mine with one from MMR. It‘s actually an OEM Ford sensor.
Thank you. The fact that you have a 2019 and the OEM 2 wire sensor worked with your harness is very helpful to know. The Ford connector catalog shows the 2019 Mustang using a 3 wire connector for the crank position sensor which threw me for a loop.
The Ford connector catalog is supported by Tasca's website as it shows part number JR3Z-6C315-A as the correct part number for 2018-2023 and BR3Z-6C315-B as the correct part number for 2011-2017. The 11-17 part on Tasca's site, and the 11-24 part on MMR's site, both look like a 2 wire reluctor sensor while the 18-23 part on Tasca's site looks like a 3 wire hall effect sensor.
2018-2023 (JR3Z-6C315-A) sensor with 3 pins:
2011-2017 (BR3Z-6C315-B) sensor with 2 pins
There's no way the 18-23 sensor on Tasca's site would have plugged into your harness based on the pictures. Based on your experience I'm more confident that Ford made an error in the parts catalog.
I know because I purchased a gen3 crank position sensor because I had a gen3 shortblock and the rear cover is changed. Would not plug in with my gen 2 harness so I had to buy the gen2 crank position sensor.
Here’s the part number on the crank sensor that I purchased from MMR with my rear seal plate kit. Hopefully you’ll be able to make it out well enough to compare.
@NGOT8R - The picture you posted really helps...thanks. In looking at the picture the crank sensor
is the 2018+ part based on where the gasket is placed on the sensor and where the tab is located on the electrical side.
@tdstuart - Thanks for confirming that the plug on the Gen 2 harness doesn't work with the Gen 3 sensor.
