Techs, builders or an experienced DIY’ers I have a question for you. When the engine is assembled minus the cams ( I am installing some built Gen 1 heads and timing components)……..

1. Can the engine be rotated to say conduct a “leak down” on each cylinder given all the valves should be full retracted into their seats (given no issues with springs or stem issues)?

2. If so, once finished placing the crank key way in the 12 o’clock position (Gen 1) would return the pistons to their non interference positions correct? Setting up the green light to follow the respected timing procedures?
- key way 12 o’clock
- rotate key way counter clockwise to 9 o’clock, install cams, phasers, primary chain, etc on left side of engine
- Rotate clockwise back to 12 o’clock install cams, phasers, primary chain, etc on right side of engine
So on and so forth………

Is that the proper understanding of the basic relationship between the positions of the pistons and valves in relation to setting up the engine to begin timing procedures?

Thanks in advance
