Please educate me on this....
Has anyone ever tried, or know if it's even possible, to swap the CMCV sensors from a 2015 manifold to a 2018 manifold to install in a 2015 car? I know it's probably not a bolt on, but could it be modded to make it work?
The reason I ask is a few months ago my nephew had to deal with the cracked manifold/broke CMCV shaft issue on his 2015 with 49k miles. The dealer parts dept had no idea if/when a new 2015 manifold would be available and suggested he get a new 2018 manifold, which meant also getting a tuner + a tune, CMCV harnesses, and brake booster vacuum lines. Add in labor (he has no inclination or desire to do the work himself) and the total cost would've been almost $2000. In the end, he found a new 2015 manifold on eBay for $700 and decided to go that route since it's a simple R & R with no other complications, $1000 all in and done.
This experience plus all of the anecdotal stories I've seen about the 2015-17 manifold failures got me thinking about what the cheapest solution to this would be, so I'd be prepared if I ever need to deal with this on my own 2015. By far, the cheapest suitable manifold available is the 2018+ F150, new take offs routinely pop up on ebay for around $100. 2nd in line would be 2018+ GT, NTO can be had for $300, sometimes less, and by "suitable" I mean a manifold that is not prone to repeat the CMCV failure, I'm not at all opening up another "which manifold is better on the street" debate. My goal here is simply to find the cheapest solution to the failure. From what I've read, either 2018 manifold should run and drive just fine without a tune (maybe just not optimized, but it will still run fine) and the only reason a tune is required is because the voltage values from the CMCV sensors are different in 2018+ manifolds and that causes wrench light to come on. A custom tune is needed to correct the voltage values the PCM uses for the CMCV system.
All of which brings me back to my question at the top of this post, if the only issue requiring a tune is the voltage from the sensors, why not just swap out the sensors? Is it possible?
