2017 V6 here. I had 70% tint applied to my windshield a few weeks ago, and since then my cluster has been dimming in broad daylight, making the gauges really difficult to read (the backlights might as well be off because they're useless). I can set the dial to automatic and have night levels of brightness, but that's only marginally better and I don't want to be running my headlights 24/7. Changing the dimming level next to the headlight dial also doesn't help.

Thing is, I know plenty of folks who have 40% or darker on their windshield and don't have this issue.

I replaced the sun load sensor for a cheap troubleshoot but that didn't solve the problem. Any ideas why my car thinks it's dark outside? Please don't bring up removing the tint. I realize it's an option but it's hot as balls in GA and my car sits in a large open lot at work, so it's my last option.

My guess would be that maybe the differences in film are what’s causing it to happen in your case and not in others. I wouldn’t call it an issue as your current situation is self inflicted. It sounds like the system is operating as designed. It observes the amount of light present and dims the cluster lights when necessary. You’re now blocking 30% of that incoming light. I think you know the answer to your question

Modularkid pretty much nailed the dimming issue.

When parked in the sun I’d recommend the Covercraft ā€˜UV’ series heat shield. It makes quite a difference. Custom-fit and you just flip your visors down to hold in place.

I’m using my old shield from my WRX, fits good enough but the mustang-specific shield would fit even better.
