Close-call thread (Dash Cam)

The thing is, all dashcams kinda suck in one way or another, regardless of price. Don't expect to reliably be able to read license plates, and completely forget it in low light.

Buy the middle of the road g1w-c and go with that. The more expensive ones still suck, but suck slightly less, and they make up for it by adding more features.

A higher resolution cam will enable you to better read license plates. I am able to with the following:

It is capable of recording at 2304x1296P or 2560x1080P. Also has a high dynamic range mode for better dark/light contrast.

I actually had someone run into me at very low speed while I was stopped. There wasn't any damage to my car, but it was nice to have the dashcam video and the cam actually caught the audio of the conversation we had outside the car (my window was down) where they admitted to not paying attention.

Had there been damage I would have just grabbed the camera off the mount and recorded the damage to both cars, as well as their license plate, drivers license, and insurance info.

But yea, just having any camera constantly recording is better than nothing, but a lot people get disappointed when they can't clearly catch license plate #s.

I'm waiting for the day a 4k 60fps large sensor camera hits the market. Might be a while though.

Relative speed between your car and the other car is all that matters. I've found a framerate of 30fps to be fine. I suppose it's an issue at highways speeds if you are attempting to read a parked car's license plate as you pass it. Otherwise 30FPS seems plenty quick. Additionally, many cams (the vantrue included) offer 60fps modes. 60fps will be darker however.

I have a 4k 30fps sensor in my lumix gx8, and have gotten some great footage mounting it externally with a fat gecko. I think it would be overkill as a dashcam!

But sure, I would love to see a 4k 60fps micro 4/3 sensor dash cash with a f1.4 aperture 14mm lens (or lower)!

Guy got caught up in trying to switch lanes and neglected to detect traffic was coming to a stop ahead. Only takes a few seconds of distraction to get bit like that ... be careful out there !

Following way too close is always the issue.
3 second rule people.
Keeps rocks chips off your bumper too.

Exactly. But it did not help the white car cut over to the left just a bit too. Looks like he ditched last minute only to clip the benz.

I learned something from that video. Planning on using the apron as your escape route works when ONLY YOU use it! And not the car right in front of you, too.

I like the left lane in certain freeway stretches, because the wall to my left is more predictable than any driver. But the drivers in the left lane seem to assume that they can keep their +20mph speed with no impediments. Which means you have to adjust your following distance in front of you even higher when someone tailgates you.
