A higher resolution cam will enable you to better read license plates. I am able to with the following:The thing is, all dashcams kinda suck in one way or another, regardless of price. Don't expect to reliably be able to read license plates, and completely forget it in low light.
Buy the middle of the road g1w-c and go with that. The more expensive ones still suck, but suck slightly less, and they make up for it by adding more features.

It is capable of recording at 2304x1296P or 2560x1080P. Also has a high dynamic range mode for better dark/light contrast.
I actually had someone run into me at very low speed while I was stopped. There wasn't any damage to my car, but it was nice to have the dashcam video and the cam actually caught the audio of the conversation we had outside the car (my window was down) where they admitted to not paying attention.
Had there been damage I would have just grabbed the camera off the mount and recorded the damage to both cars, as well as their license plate, drivers license, and insurance info.
