Mercedes looked like it couldn't decide which lane. And you got into its blind spot. Assuming the driver even bothered to check the mirrors. Probably best not to attempt to drive on past the Mercedes until it looks firmly committed to its lane. No telling if its driver is talking, texting, eating a hamburger, applying makeup, etc. due to the dark tinted windows. Mercedes idiocy was confirmed when it ran the red light.

He basically cut you off - and as said, probably didn't see you. But he did have his blinker on. ANYTIME someone has a blinker on and they can make a move, then best to EXPECT them to make a move you are not expecting. That is one key to defensive driving.
Yes I think you are right, I should use more caution while trying to pass that SUV. That empty lane and the counting green light made me too aggressive.
