Hi Everyone,

A family member opened their car door into my 19 Bullitt and took a chip out of the door. I'm interested to know what damage of this degree entails to be repaired. I'm unlikely to make any attempt to repair this on my own and will take this to a body shop but would repair involve some filler and paint or replacing the whole door? I'm concerned about the color matching.

Thanks

Appears you just need a bit of touching up. I can appreciate being unsure about doing it yourself. Consider buying a paint correcting pen first, then taking it and the car to a shop and see what they think.

Someone who repairs such items on a regular basis can possibly work wonders with just the pen.

Not the cheapest but by far the best.

Edit: looking at this a little closer thatā€™s a really deep chip. You will need to lay down multiple thin layers to build up the paint. Dr. CC allows you to do this easily.

If a shop even remotely suggests replacing the entire door for thatā€”turn around, walk out, get in your car, and go somewhere else.

As said above. This is a touch-up job, and a paint pen will work just fine. If you're truly uncertain about doing it yourself, that's completely fineā€”take the paint pen along to a body shop (or potentially even a professional detailer) and see if they'd correct it for you. Could even have your paint prettied up further, to boot!

+1 for Dr Colorchip. I've used it on three of my cars with excellent results. Ira is right about the multiple layers for this gouge, but it'll be fine, you'll barely notice when you get done.

I'll also +1 for colorchip, in fact. I used it to fill a decidedly not insignificant gouge in the painted region of the lower splitter that I'd rack up as worse than your door ding, seeing as it came from our belgian malinois (Don't ask...). Worked wonders.

I see they have different kits, should I order the basic or get one of the kits with more included? To me, the price seems reasonable for all of them just not sure what is needed.

If the $20 isnā€™t going to make or break you, I would say get the Squirt & Squeegee Plus kit. It has everything you need to take care of this chip and any others you may get.

Done right, yeah paint the whole door. My body guy would tell me the same thing. Now can you touch it up correctly for a decent result, probably.
