I pulled my trunk weatherstripping yesterday and found rust underneath on both sides of the pinch weld. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that this is a problem that is almost certain to be a common issue.
I say all of that to say, pull your weatherstripping, check and repair (if necessary) before it’s too late.
Here are my before and after pics. I wire wheeled and used a Scotch Brite pad to scuff it and then hit it with 3 coats of Rustoleum 2X. FWIW, my car has only been in the rain a few times since I bought it new in 2020. I believe any amount of water can cause this (even when washing the car).
