how do i make sure to not get a check engine light when putting these in? has bungs before and after the cats, what goes into them? what do i need to buy?

im lost, someone point me in the right direction.

If you get a tune (which most people do with LTHs), you will likely have to deal with the check engine light.

I don’t think there are any tuners that are willing to turn the CEL off in the tune anymore.

Are they used? Looks like someone installed a cheat tube on the rear sensor bung.

Oxygen sensors go in the bungs.

From the sound of your post you should find someone to help you or have a shop install them.

The bungs have got to be for your oxygen sensors. Maybe the engine computer wants readings before and after the catalyst, to make sure the catalyst is there and it's working.

Do your stock O2 sensors not reach the new bungs?
Do the headers have more bungs than you have sensors? 🤔

I remember from shopping for Evo mods that some exhaust parts came with an extra bung for an aftermarket wide-band sensor. A tuner would want that sensor to take readings on a dyno, or during a tuning drive. Rather than sell you the expensive sensor, and leave it in place long after tuning, they might just plug that bung when they're done.

I also remember seeing a lot of half-assed "high flow cats" on the market. Car makers and the EPA have gotten wise to nonsense like this:
Evo X catted test pipe, to trick ECU.png

Vendors would use a half-length catalyst brick for the sake of flow, and have the O2 sensor bung on a long or bent tube, so the exhaust hitting is at the right temp to give the ECU happy readings.

From your pics, I can't tell if you have a serious catalyst or not. That longer bung downstream looks like it might be longer than necessary.

I can see why tuners might not be willing to turn off a CEL.

Yeah, that certainly does look like an 02 spacer there. Which means whoever had them before was getting a cat efficiency CEL.

OP, if you're just trying to avoid the light on the dash then that spacer "should" prevent that. If you have to pass some emissions inspection then it will probably fool the OBDII portion but a visual inspection will fail.
And I agree with K4fxd, it sounds like you need some experienced help this.

yes used. the previous owner cut up ak h pipe to replace the cats. assuming thats why the bungs are fabricated into the connection pipes

The bungs are where they are supposed to be. One closest to the engine gets the wideband and the rear one is the narrow band.

You won't pass emissions with a CEL, period.
If you can get the CEL off and do the drive cycle to get most of the systems to read ready, you'll probably pass. I believe you're allowed 1 or two to not display ready and still pass. Unless they do a physical inspection and see that spacer. Then you will fail as it's considered tampering with the emissions system and that is a hard fail until you restore the system.
