Good Morning,

Does anyone know if there is a CARB certified downpipe for our cars? If not, does anyone have an opinion on whose catted downpipe is most likely to pass an emissions test?

Hi Bob (BTW are you the same Bob Lyons who stated the 93 Cobra SCOA newsletter a few years back)? If so, glad to have you on this site!

Regarding the down pipe:
According to this link for a CORSA catted DP for the EB, it’s stated “CARB Compliant”, but I do t see any CARB EO number anywhere in this listing (or on CORSA’s actual website):
https://www.carid.com/2016-ford-mustang-exhaust-systems/corsa-downpipes-705527459.html#features

For quality and performance, I’m biased to BBK; their products are always spot on with regards to fit/finish and performance. They have a really nice DP for the Mustang Ecoboost, but according to their site, it’s not CARB certified.

However in NJ, I don’t think you’ll really have any issues with anyone questioning the fact that you have aftermarket exhaust components when going through State inspection. If you’re concern is a visual inspection passing, 90% of the State Inspection employees would not be able to discern the difference between a factory DP and one that is aftermarket.

As far as hi-flow cat passing a sniffer test, it should pass w/o issues considering the Mustang Ecoboost is a fairly “clean” running engine. As long as the catted DP is from a reputable vendor, it will most likely pass emissions.

I can tell you factually that my 94 Cobra (when it was applicable to NJ emissions laws), went right through and passed NJ State emissions testing with BBK long tube headers and BBK hi-flow catted H pipe - both pieces non-factory equipment. These parts have been on my Cobra for over 10+yrs now and I have prior emissions paperwork to prove so... Now I run a BBK offroad H all the time now, since vehicles from 1995 and older are no longer required to go through emissions at all. :)

Mishimoto also makes a quality DP as well and they are located in the Tri-State area. According to American Muscle Staff response, the Mishimoto catted DP for the Mustang Ecoboost should pass emissions for those States that have adopted the CA Air Resources Board Restrictions (see the Q&A response within the below link; scroll to bottom once on their page). However, Mishimoto does NOT show or list any CARB certification for this DP on their website.

This link is also helpful for looking up CARB certified aftermarket parts or Companies that have been granted CARB Executive Orders:
https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/amquery.php

Additional catalytic converter CARB info:
https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermktcat/aftermktcat.htm

Catalytic converters database CARB lookup (note: nothing is listed for a Ford vehicle from 2014 forward...not sure why or why not, but I’m posting the link anyway as it may have benefits to others with older vehicles make/model):
https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/AftermarketParts/catalysts

Hope something above is helpful!

CObra Jet,

Yeah, it's me. Had some issues and other things that really complicated life for a while, but everything is pretty good right now, just hoping I can make it to retirement. Thanks for the info on the downpipes. While you had some decent luck with NJ inspection, all I ever got was grief with the Cobra, until I got a Collector inspection sticker. Anyway, I'll probably take a couple of days off in the spring and do the downpipe, intercooler, piping, blow-off and wastegate, get it tuned and call it done. It's a 2015 50th Anniversary package 6-speed convertible in Ruby Red that goes from mid-spring to late fall making winery runs, so not that much more is needed.

BTW, as soon as Chris Winter and I can hook up, the CObra will finally get the set of AFR heads and one of the last KB 5.0 blowers produced installed. Should get me interested in it again!

You will never find a performance downpipe with a CARB EO number. Especially since emissions components are warrantied for 8 years on a new car. The only downpipes you will find with an EO will be stock replacements.

Now, if you have someone that can gloss over the visual part of the inspection you can have an aftermarket downpipe that will pass OBDII emissions testing.

My car with the cp-e catted downpipe set all the emission ready codes with the stock computer calibration and passed when connected to the machine. To be honest, I was quite shocked.

CARB certification is going to be dependent on the tune. If you change the downpipe, you're no longer compatible with the factory or Ford Performance tune and will need to seek a custom tuner who will tune your particular setup...
