Unless its already clean, yes. Dragging a cover, even a soft one, over a dirty painted surface can cause micro marring in the clear coat.

If you use the car cover as frequently as I do, that would be impossible. My cover does not get very dirty. When I do wash it I have to remember cold water and no dryer

You use them once the car has been cleaned. It's for storage purposes. Putting a car cover on a car after it has been sitting outside, driven & contaminated is probably going to cause more harm to your paint than just letting the car sit. Dirt doesn't hurt your car unless it's moved around on your paint. Tossing a cover over, on and shifting around on your car will do exactly that.

I've been considering a car cover for daily use.

My company closed our downtown office and moved us out to a plant on the outskirts of town. No covered parking here so the daily summer exposure appears to have faded my paint slightly. I also heard they occasionally get hail out here and cars have been damaged in the past so I've considered getting a padded car cover.

So I take it this is NOT a good idea?

Very inexpensive generic cover- Costco $29

If you want an (very) inexpensive decent cover, Costco sells one for $29. It is a Moda model by Coverking. This is size 'M'. I feel like some thatI do not want to put any cover on my car when it is not clean or just quick wiped down with instant detailer. Due to this, my cover usually sits on the shelf. Being that I only use it from time to time in the garage when car is very clean (I don't want to contaminate the cover with dirt), I was not interested in spending for a pricey custom cover, but that is just me. YMMV.

I had a cheap cover but didn't like the fit bought one from American Muscle with 50 year logo fits like a glove worth every penny.

I just got my Mustang. I ordered a Noah car cover from the-cover-store.com. They have WeatherShield also; I had the WeatherShield HP on may last car, and I had a Noah on the car before that. I plan to take care of the paint, so good quality car cover is important to me. I will cover everyday at work, and keep garaged at home. I think you can keep drag to a minimum by laying the cover on top and unfolding around the car; reverse when you want to put it away.

the-cover-store.com rates the different car covers. To me the Noah seemed to have softer material, but absorbed rain water. (The design looks a little different between the one I got last month and the one I bought in 2002, though, so maybe it is better now). The WeatherShield HP is more compact and very rain tolerant (does not absorb water). If you live in an area with frequent rain I'd go with the WeatherShield HP. The Noah I had to take to laundrymat to find a extra large washing machine; the WeartherShield HP would fit in my washing machine at home. The WeatherShield HP cost me ~50% more.
