Dealer is offering me invoice pricing on a GT premium, didn't really have to ask for it.

Since it was so easy to get I'm wondering if this is considered a good deal or should I push for more?

You could try for a few hundred dollars under invoice, however if I got that deal I would be fine with it. Personally I just went with x plan.

Wouldn't selling below the invoice be a loss for the dealer? Why would the dealer go on about lowering the price, say if they do?

My thought was that there MUST be profit for them if they are offering me invoice without any effort on my part. How much profit and therefore negotiating room is the mystery.

Isn't invoice the same as X Plan?

That's interesting because I went in asking if they accept it and he said "I'll just give you invoice."

That's why I figured they were the same.

They're not, but for car on the lot you can definitely do better than x-plan, especially now when there's plenty of them on the lots.

I ordered mine, got x-plan pricing and dealer never took my pin or filed any paperwork as this was above for what he was selling GTs at that time anyway.

So generally doing x-plan for a car on the lot doesn't make a lot of sense now.

I tried using the Costco auto program but the dealer I went to said the mustang was exempt from the program but they were willing to order it at invoice plus incentives. Other areas may have better luck with Costco though abd if so it should be better than the x-plan. I called a competing dealer and they beat the original dealers price by $100.

Its available for the mustang in Canada, but its not showing up as an incentive in Michigan for the mustang for me... weird.

I had the same question in my mind. I went in on 3/24 to order one and they gave me invoice - 200. Plus I was able to lock in on the cash back incentive for the same or better. I was pretty happy with that so I went ahead with it. Still, it was pretty easy to get that price so I did wonder if I could have done better.

Invoice isn't what a dealer really owns the vehicle for. They also have holdback, which for Ford is 3% I believe. Ford should also have some type of program called Delivery Assistance (that is what Toyota calls it) where they receive some money when the car is sold. That money basically covers for the prep, gas, wash, etc.

So basically if they are selling at invoice they will make about 3% give or take, but that is gross and not net. They have to pay the salesperson out of that, management etc. A dealership is doing good if they net 17% of their gross profit. So lets say their holdback is $800 (not sure of your sales price), so if you buy it at invoice then you are allowing them just under $200 net profit, plus profit on fees such as doc fee and the sort. Just how hard do you want to squeeze them is the question.

But they a will do that because it is a volume game, the more they sell the more they earn. The more they earn the more they sale, and not everyone gets invoice, of course they can't.

The dealer offers invoice pricing, then tries to make his profit on doc fees, extended warranty, paint sealant, above market financing, and insurance. He's planning on making more than just the holdback.
