A lot of Mustangs for sale across the country show California emissions on the Monrony label, even though the cars are at non-California Ford dealers.

What is California emissions and does it impact performance or anything else? Why are they on non-California cars?

Some other states have adopted the California emissions standards, so they build them to that spec.

Search the forum... One guy bought a car from a non-California emission state and it did not have California emission on his car and his car was deemed illegal and registration was not allowed

ALL Mustangs are now built to the same smog standard.
There is NO difference in terms of performance, mpg etc
The statute and regs in Calif are old (as with most states they do not update statutes very often) and date from a time when CA SMOG standards and smog equipment was was unique to California. If you drove through the Los Angeles basin in 1966 you would understand and see the reasons for it.

CA regs require a CA SMOG certification sticker (now form over function). If a dealer orders CA Smog the car gets the sticker (many dealers in West order the CA Smog sticker to make cross state line sales easier)... NO sticker-NO Registration. "50 State" Smog stickers do not count, the old reg requires the sticker specifically state CA certified.

Exception is for used cars...used is defined as 7500 miles on the OD for a CA resident bring a car into the State. If your moving into Calif from another State to take up residence and you have a brand new car (under 7500 miles) you get a pass.

A growing # of states have adopted CA emissions. WA state has required CA emissions on new cars since 2009, for example. Cross border states can order cars with or without CA emissions. Track Pkg GT's get 50 State Emissions instead of CA emissions. IIRC, 50 State, CA, and Federal emissions are differentiated simply by computer tuning. No actual hardware is different and the performance does not seem to be different.

I was just looking into this. I was looking at (before I just got my 15 RR Mustang :D )bringing in a 1014 car from Nevada. All th info is below in regards to emissions and CA. Mustangs are 50State/ Ca certified.

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr29

I have lived in Ca all my life and I can say the smog (global warming gases are a totally different thing) was so much worse back in the 70's when i was a kid. I remember many "Smog Alert" days in elementary school when we could not run and play outside. So it is a good thing. The few HP you gain is not worth it to remove or not have it Ca emissions standard. obviously if you track a lot this would not apply.:headbang:

I did a detailed ITIS search on my ordered 2015...

The ITIS report stated that it was certified for 49 States, with California the exception. I ordered from MN...so not too worried. But the statement that ALL 2015s are certified for sale in California may not be correct.

All cars, since it is now a global powertrain, have the same emissions standards in order to comply with all 100+ countries it will be sold in with little if any modification from Ford.

For example, thanks to 2008 Euro5 and 2015 Euro6 emissions regulations for the European Union, the Mustang should be legal in every US state including California, as the Euro regulations are stricter on many requirements (especially Carbon Monoxide).

Data directly from the EPA and European Union

I've looked at window stickers on line for cars for sale across the country. Some clearly include a CA Emissions option and some do not.

All Mustangs are NOT Certified for California. But THEY NOW ALL MEET CA standards!

They are ALL built the SAME.
NO CA SMOG sticker--It ain;'t coming into CA as a NEW vehicle (by a CA resident). See the post above with the link-it will show you the two different stickers.

Many auto companies tried to list their cars as "50 State Certified" but under CAs old out of date Regs...DMV clerks didn't comprehend that ALL 50 states included CA as CA is one of the 50 states (as we pretty much consider ourselves a different country here)....THUS a CA car MUST have the bloody CA Certification sticker with "California" Spelled out...which the dealer gets when they order the car under the CA Smog code.

Live in a State other then CA with NO CA sticker and two weeks after you buy the car your company transfers you to Calif that is NOT a problem- your car will pass the smog tests in CA. And as a NON-resident moving here and bringing the car with you DMV will allow the vehicle in and register it (once you pass a smog test).

I wasn't really asking about whether a is certified in California. I'm just curious as to what the option is that is shown an the window sticker.

Not true. CA has always had more stringent standards than EPA (still does), and now there are 10 or 15 other states that have been allowed by the Fed to adopt those standards as well. In these days of computer controls and super-efficient catalysts, there's not much if any performance loss and CA emissions are mostly a matter of certifying the tune. But you have to have the sticker. CA is all about the sticker. You'd think it was the sticker that makes the air clean.

You may not bring a non-CA new car into CA. It must be "used," i.e., registered in another state first, and must be at least 90 days old with at least 3,000 miles on it before CA will let it in as a used car. Really puts a cramp on buying a car in Oregon, you know?

The guy on the forum who had a problem bought a Federal car out of his state, not knowing his state was now a CA-emissions state. He couldn't register it. Just out of luck. So be careful to know what you need and don't blindly cross borders to get a deal. It can get expensive to make that mistake.

Here's the scoop on available emissions configurations on 2015 Mustangs. To not have CA emissions the car would have to qualify as described below.
