Brakes applied. Power reduced

This morning I was driving and I downshifted whole approaching a red light. I look at the dash and I saw a message "brakes applied. Power reduced". What it that supposed to mean? This is the first time I saw it in 6 months of owning the car. I be tried replicating it but didn't see the message again.

You where pushing both - the brake and the gas - at the same time and the car is telling you it will default to the brake and reduce the gas input.....
