As a teenager, I had a ‘67 GTA fastback with a 390/C6. That car taught me a lot. The rear end would never whip around but it could drift like a mofo. Punch it in any gear at nearly any speed and it would light’em up.I had a similar experience. Highway, 80mph, overtaking a semi truck. I got about 3/4 of the way past him and he decided to move into my lane. Maybe I was in his blind spot, who knows, but he was switching lanes and I was there. Too far into the pass to hit the brakes, so I moved left and punched it. Holy mother of God! The A10 downshifted and the rear wheels spun just enough to shift the rear out and it surprised the dickens out of me. I mean, who expects tires to spin at 80 mph? The nannies kicked in and I instinctively corrected, safely getting out of the situation, but without the nannies, who knows how it would have ended up!
The service manager at my Ford dealer told me that he turned off TC once, and the experience convinced him to never do it again. I have deep respect for owners who use track mode and learn how to handle it. They way that I learned where limits are and how to handle a car when you exceed them when I was a teenager destroyed about 7 or 8 cars. I have no intention of repeating that with my 400+HP Mustang!
Great times and lots of tickets!
The older cars were great to learn on because they would gradually let go. The newer models hold on tight until they don’t..
Traction control is best applied with your right foot.
