Hi, I got my EU stang a few days ago, so I apologize for a dumb question. I was wondering if the turbo is working right... I feel there is not much of a kick or boost when accelerating. I started to watch the Boost gauge on the LCD and when I kick the gas down in third gear for example, it goes somewhere between 0 and 0.7 bar. The max I have seen is 1.1 bar. The gauge can go up to 3 bars. Is this normal on a stock EB? The engine feels to start gaining power at about 5.5k rpm onwards.

If im in 3rd gear at say 2500rpm and go full throttle the car will immediately hit 11-13ish psi. As the tach gets higher it will eventually get around 20 psi by the end of the run. The power feels like it comes in stages. Immediate power, then another jump or 2 while the ecu does its calculations I guess. Not sure if this helps but i dont know what you mean by bars maybe you have the pp gauge or something. Also it's not much of a kick but it's still fun. Tune might help out

BAR is a different measurement for boost. 1.1 is about 16psi. How long have you had the car. What kind of fuel is in the tank? Is it a manual or automatic? Is the ECU pulling timing because of heat? What RPM are you attempting to get full boost at? A lot of factors play into that.

The engine starts to feel alive at 5.5K? That is where most of us feel that it starts to die.

Many ppl had trouble reaching full boost when this car came out. I remember I rarely saw 19psi until I swapped to premium fuel and broke the motor in.

I'm thinking it could be your fuel. If you're looking for full boost at 5.5k RPM you're not going to see it.

Thanks a lot tohoth of you guys for such a detailed answer!

I am using the most premium fuel you can get in Europe, 102 octane. The EU measurement is different from the US, that might be something like 95 or 98 US octanes? The motor is just breaking in, it has the first 600miles on it. It's a manual. I did my test on 3rd and 4th gears hitting the pedal down at 1.5k rpm on a warmed up engine.
From what you wrote undersand I probably should not worry as this will change once the engines has done a few thousand miles?

Sorry for being a noob. :/

I would check the intercooler pipes. I'm betting you have some loose clamps.

Check out some YouTube videos. Lots of acceleration videos with a view of the tach/speedo/boost gauge. I don't think it gets near max boost until top end 5k+ range personally. Also the higher gear you are in will correlate to reaching 20psi even slower. It's not going to hit 20psi when you punch it at low rpm so don't expect that.

What RPM are you seeing max boost?

IIRC the brief time mine was stock I would hit 20-21 PSI in 3-4th gear in the top of the rev range.

The easiest thing to do first is check the clamps. Mine were a hair loose after 1000 miles.

Hi Smidra,

I am also in EU, France.

On mine max boost is 2 bars at the hightest; I have the 0 to 3 bar gauge like you.

I have not the "full boost " at 5.5 rpm but I understang what you mean.

On mine it is the same, full power , speed rises quickly after 5.5 rpm.

As a lot of people are saying, check your pipes; mine were loose ( 0.5 cm ) when delivered by dealer at the 4 clamps.

Thanks a lot to all of you guys for the tips!
I will check the pipes, did you get to them from the bottom of the car by removing the cover? I have nowhere to lift the car up, I will have to stop by the dealer :(

Thanks a lot! Good to know you can reach 2 bars, then I really have a problem... I will check the pipes first.

Hi,

No, I had acces to mine from top for turbo one ( 2 clamp ) and return to motor also from the top ( the bigger one ) .

For the intercoller ones ( 2 in and out ) I turn the steering wheel left and right and can access removing the wheel fender with the 3 access " push to release " pins on each side.

So in the end I was passing my dealer's so I stopped by, because the turbo started to do some scratching noises instead of the usual turbo spool. They have tightened all the pipes and I am indeed getting a better performance! Ford claims all the pipes were already tightened OK, but whatever. It is also confirmed by the boost gauge, that now boldly goes beyond 1.5 bar.

Thanks to all you guys for help!

I asked them about the scratching turbo noise and they said they have no idea, maybe it's normal... and I should wait till they have another EB car so we can compare. What a bunch of...

I am getting back to this thread as the boost now has correct numbers, but the pull of the car still sucks. The highest I can achieve is 0.65G's. Other EU owners are getting 0.8G+
I am getting my car on the dyno next week to take the results to my dealer and make them fix the engine.

Are you sure that this isn't an expectations thing? Like, you thought it would feel faster than it is?

Also, there is something you need to understand about the boost. The ECU tune is designed to create engine torque. It is not designed to make a specific amount of boost. If the air is not leaking but you see the boost is not very high, that doesn't mean there is something wrong. When the air is cooler it needs less boost. You are also running fuel that is better than what we can get in the US. It may be able to advance the spark timing and need less boost.

Also, the mapping of the accelerator pedal can affect how the engine feels. If you have a performance package you can change the drive mode to Sport and it will be more sensitive. So it will ask the engine to make more torque with less pedal.

Could someone take a picture on where exactly those clamps are in the engine bay of the EB? I would like to check mine but I am a total noob when it comes to this.
