Bleed/Burp Coolant

After draining the coolant and then refilling, (for example, after changing out a thermostat, etc.) do our cars need to be bled/burped? Or is this done automatically when the engine is started?

Not sure if it will do it automatically, but I have always done it myself. Fill the system with coolant and squeeze the lower radiator hose a bunch of times, add coolant, repeat.
