I wouldn't want to give up some low/mid range power for more top end. At least not for a DD.
The ebm is already fast enough/too fast vs the speed limits that I would not want to have to push it even harder to have some fun.

I'm on the Ford performance tune and very happy with it. In a few years, when warranty is over and the car is fully paid off, I'd love to mod it some more with fmic, downpipe, wmi wg to name a few but I don't have any project for a bigger turbo, at least not yet.

If you haven't done wheels and tires that'd be where I'd start, huge improvement for me when I went to OCD outlaws 20" with mpss in 255 front and 295 rear.
Improved my 0-60 by 0.7sec ! I had the 18" with 235 width so if you have the 19" it may not be as huge of an improvement but I know many arent happy with the tires that came with those either (a friend swapped his pirelly p zero after only a week on his gt because he hated them). The 18" wheels/tires where down right scary when pushed hard ! Now Its nearly impossible to spin the wheels unless you launch too aggressively.

If the limit of the block is 350hp without using alternative fuel, an auxiliary fuel system, or an aftermarket HPFP, then I wonder if the use of an aftermarket turbo alone, without any other supporting mod, is worth the investment. I mean it's just an extra 33hp from the stock turbo, assuming that you are on pure high quality gas, right?

I would like a better turbo on my car, but I thought that I could reach higher power levels, without the need to add any other mods. I remember reading somewhere that the PTE can reach 390-400 whp on high octane gas, without any risk to the motor and this convinced me to start thinking about investing on this turbo. I have no plans to use alternative fuel, as I have no access to this kind of fuel in my country.
Sounds like you'd want an aftermarket HPFP. Someone makes one that's much higher capacity than the factory unit... (forgot who).

Some spoke high of the Vargas set up. I remember one member running it on 93 octane and the power delivery underneath the curve was reason enough to upgrade. There is a science to matching a turbo to its engine - the aftermarket uses mostly "ballpark" figures.

So what is the consensus? Is it worth fitting a drop-in turbo such as the PTE NX2 if no alternative fuel is used and with no other mods apart from an intercooler and a catback exhaust? Are there any significant power gains without any risk to the engine?

Can anyone who has the PTE fitted on his car chime in and share his impessions? I would like to have first hand information about this setup before committing a significant amount of money on this kit and risking to blow my engine.

Watching this thread with interest... If I had the time and resources I think I’d pull the head and send it off for port/polish and stage 2 cams. Then I’d add the Precision drop-in turbo and get tuned. I feel like it would make for a very efficient setup that would make good power with relatively low boost on the stock block.

Well, after discussing this with a few people who have experience with this kind of stuff, it seems that the limiting factor in making a decision on a turbo setup like this one is fuel. From what I ‘ve been advised, 93 oct fuel knocks at ~360-370 hp, so a drop-in turbo would only add about 30hp vs the stock turbo. I am about at this power level with a tune, intercooler and a Tune+ wga.

To reach reliably high power levels, aux fuel has to be used. I do not have access to aux fuel and even if I had I wouldn’t like to mess with this kind of stuff as I do not race the car (well I am merely an occasional traffic light racer!). So in my case a drop-in turbo seems like a complete waste of money.

Don't confuse crank horsepower with rear wheel horsepower. Stock rear wheel horsepower is about 275. So if power pack adds 25 you are at 315 (couldn't find dyno graph). Also understand power pack even outs and extends power greatly from what is reported.
So if you are talking rear horspower of 360-370 this would be knocking on 400 crank horsepower. Therefore a larger turbo set up (or aftermarket tune) can add quite a bit of horsepower until fuel max-out

You are absolutely right and I am taking the opportunity to update my post above. I discussed with the people who advised me and they were reporting whp, not crank hp. Which makes a world of difference!

You see in Europe we are used to report crank hp, whereas in the US people report whp more frequently. So, yes, 360-370whp is a great power upgrade! On top of that a more powerfhl drop-in turbo will be able to keep this power all the way to redline.

You will likely flatten out the torque curve for more consistent power delivery as well.

Hi,

aux fuel=auxilliary fuel system. It is another set of injectors (port injectors, like cars used to be injected with before direct injection). Although many people in the USA use this for methanol injection ("meth"), it can also be used with gasoline if plumbed into the primary fuel delivery line. Obviously, the vehicle will have to be custom tuned for this...not the kind of thing an out of the box engine tune can do.

There's also the option of one of the aftermarket high pressure fuel pumps (this is the weakest point in the ecoboost stock fuel system: it is primarily what limits the amount of fuel the engine can deliver). This will also require a custom tune, as the factory tune, or even one of the canned tunes, will not know what to do with an HPFP than can deliver far more fuel than the factory one can.

I'm sure either one of these could be your solution, depending on how much money you're willing to spend...and it is in addition to the big turbo kit :thumbsup:

It seems most people aren't understanding that the fuel system is not the problem. The 93 octane is. The limit on 93 will be reached well before the limit of the stock fuel system.

People run aux systems so they can run E85. You have to inject about 20% more E85 to reach proper air fuel ratios with it. Which is why such big fuel systems are needed for it.

The stock fuel system can do plenty on regular fuel, like say 100+ octane race gas.

The limits we're talking about here is that of the knock threshold of 93. That limit will be hit before the limit of the block or fuel system.

That’s the problem indeed @ZenkaiRacer and not the fuel system. Although fortunately in Europe we have access to 100 Ron gas which is significantly better than the 93 oct one found in the US. So this would allow for a few extra horses before it knocks.

More benefits than merely HP numbers. You get the better HP figures with this bigger turbo but it is significantly better than the stocker. Flow rates and air moving should be much more efficient. And sitting at 24psi for a number of years should bear less strain on it. As previous people have posted, good amount of HP added running the same Psi. But also agree, 93 and rods are quite the limiting factor LOL
