I posted this is another thread but wanted to give it some more visibility as I seem to be one of the first with the issue.

Changed my oil at 3300 miles yesterday with the Ford branded/recommended, 5w20 Castrol Ford Professional oil. Before the oil change everything was quiet. I'd check the engine regularly to ensure I wasn't hearing any issues, so I'm confident this is a new thing.

I had zero issues performing the actual oil change, minus the oil filter location (I've opened another thread regarding this). The oil drain plug was a doddle and turned fairly easily by hand (contary to other reports that it's difficult). I filled the engine with roughly 9.5L, bringing it to about half way up the dip stick marker. I then primed the oil pump by cranking the engine for a short time (5-10 seconds ish) by holding the brake and accelerator and turning the of ignition on.

Straight away, tick tick, tick tick tick, tick.... *Sigh*. Video here . It seems to manifest itself at slight engine load at low RPMs.

What gives?? I know this has been discussed to death and there's a million theories. But one of those theories is that it doesn't affect the RHD market. My thoughts are is that I'm probably one of the first to actually change the oil on my 18 and there's tons of reports due to come flooding in around April next year when everyone starts getting their first service performed.

My plan is to just wait it out for now and if it still exists after the first service next year, I'll report it. Very disappointed, but I'm remaining pragmatic. The car is under warranty after all.

Any advice? Should I try and tackle it right now by contacting Ford? Should I use Ceratec?

wonder if it would be worth using a 5w30 to see if it changes...

had an f-type v6s and that sound like a blooming diesel when cold - went to dealers and they "tested" it and even spoke to jaguar about it and siad its normal and its the hp fuel pumps making the noise....there were a lot of reports on line of supercharger bearings being faulty making the same sort of sounds...i didnt keep the thing for long it sounded like it would go bang from cold!

i know the new coyote is both direct & indirect injection and di engines can and do sound harsh/noisey when cold and that it also has the "new" plasma coated cylinder walls (anyone remember the trouble with nikasil coatings!!!!) - but dont see the connection with oil change and then the sound as the oil pressure isnt low enough for long enough to do any damaged from a sump/filter fill???

This is my worry, this happens after first oil change.I will wait untill dealer does it and make them aware there are no noises before.I believe the My18 oil comes from the factory with an additive to stop the tick.Once you just put the thin oil in you can here the cleclearances ticking.

Changed my oil at 1500mls last week.Had a little tick before every now and again when cold but its got worse since lol.im not that concerned it drives fine and no one is getting anywhere complaining to Ford.might put some Ceratec in if it gets any worse.no noise when engine warm

I would put ceratec in now as a potential preventative measure (heard a lot of good positive things about this product and anything that can help protect the engine must be a good thing). However, I don’t know if ford would void warranty on it on the back of this

I have a feeling there's some kind of additive as well, there's really no other explanation for it given the only variable in my situation is that the factory oil was drained and replaced with new oil. Something that's masking the tick is clearly getting flushed out. My thoughts are to add ceratec for now and just forget about it. It doesn't seem from research that it's something to be overly worried about for now. Hopefully, Ford will know more soon as I'll try and address it as and when.

Out of interest, is your 18 a facelift? I don't suppose you have a video of the tick? Ceratec definitely works in 100% of the times I've seen it used on youtube so I have confidence it'll mask/fix the 'issue' for now.

My thoughts are... I'll probably put it in for now and go for my next service as usual. See how things go. If it's still ticking later on next year, I'll raise it with Ford. Hopefully, by that time, it'll be more of a known issue in the UK and Ford will have an idea of how to fix it. I think, for now, only a few peoples have actually had oil changes. Come April/June/July next year, I suspect there will be be a growing number of posts with many people complaining to Ford. I'll just sit tight :)

Just an update on my situation:

I took the mustang for a 60 mile round trip yesterday. That involved 2 cold starts. On both startups, the engine didn't exhibit tick, but when the car started to warm up a little and the idle rev comes down to around 800-1k rpm, the ticks start to come in. It seems to be a resonance thing?

Anyway, tonight I decided to go ahead and pour in the ceratec (half recommended dose, which is 1 can). Results?

As I suspected from the countless examples on Youtube, the tick reduced to an almost inaudible 1/10th of the previous tick right away and the engine overall sounded much 'smoother'. I only ran the car for about 5 minutes, so didn't give it enough time for the tick to vanish altogether. You have to listen quite carefully with the exhaust on 'quiet' to hear it though and I have very good ears! I'll run the car around tomorrow and keep monitoring it, but for now I'm very happy with the results. I'll report back in a day or so. It may well be that the engine always had a very quiet tick, but it wasn't pronounced enough for anyone to ever notice.

Video of revs around 800-1k after adding Ceratec:

if it's at 1/10th, drop some more in, just to be certain until the tick goes :)

good to know this has helped!

Coyote engines have had various noises reported over the years. My 15 had a very slight regular tick and i replaced the oil at 1000/5000 and service miles. The tick on the 18's range from an irregular tick,to a more concerning irregular knock.Even replaced engines still have it.I firmly believe the factory oil has something in it to stop the tick.Too many engines have it after the oil change. My car came from the factory with oil level on the lowest mark which was strange. From what i have read the tolerances on some engines between piston rod clearance is too large and this is where the slap is occurring.Does the oil with the addictive take up the play? After an oil change does the tick develope into the more noisey slap?I fully expect mine to tick after first service so the dealership will have to sort it out.

You would think that if the bearing clearances in the motor are on the larger side EG .003, oil pressure should be affected at idle.

Ceratec delivered today. First sound of a tick, in it goes.
Are you not worried about possibly voiding warranty by adding this additive to your engine (as I don’t believe it’s Ford approved - even though it sounds like it works)?

Just curious as I have a 17 that doesn't tick but how would ford know you added it?
