Base head unit: complete black screen

So this morning, after stopping for coffee on my way to work, I got a completely black screen on the head unit :doh: Power switch did nothing. Neither did a sync reboot (next song on wheel + power button for 3 seconds).

No time or backup cam, even.

I stopped back at my house, and checked Fuse #33 (which I have pulled before). The fuse wasn't blown, so I put it back in.

Everything is magically back to normal, however I'm wondering what could have caused this.

I thought my previous black screen issues (which at least showed the time and backup camera) might have been due to my 2008-vintage iPod Nano in the center console. So I moved my music collection to my android phone, and I've been streaming over Bluetooth instead, and the iPod isn't even in the car ;) I'm up to date on my Sync (version 5.9, the latest release...).

I've had this problem several times before with one of my ipods plugged in (3rd gen touch), since I changed to a different ipod(5th gen nano) it has stopped.

Well, I got my first owner's survey in the mail this weekend (Ford contracts an outside company to do these :doh: ). I responded online, and ripped them on the head unit crashing...I'm curious if they'll do any follow up on me over this issue now ;)

Mine did the same thing the last time I left my iPod plugged in.

Had it happen twice now on the wife's Mustang in the past 5 months.

Both times that I've checked the car it sat for a few hours it was working when I checked it. I work different hours then the wife so I can't check it when it happens.

The wife is using both usb ports for music one is a usb stick and other is a iPod touch Gen 2 I think. She leaves both plugged in all the time so it's a random thing.

Happens to me here and there, still don't know what causes it and it always comes back before I can take it in to be looked at. Sync life......

I had that happen not long after I bought my car in December 2014. I turned the car off, opened the doors, then restarted and everything worked fine. I haven't had a problem since.

I wouldn't worry about it too much (although I certainly did at the time!).

It seems like the iPods are more than a coincidence. If the problem is happening frequently try using a different cable or even a different device if you have one.

This happen to me once, and actually the radio stopped working completely for like a few minutes.

Yeah, well the last one happened without an iPod (the complete black screen-where it was acting like I'd blown the head unit fuse, but I really didn't). I moved my music library over to Google Play Music, and I've been streaming from my phone using Bluetooth...:frusty: (I did this because of the suspected link between iPods and random head unit crashes).

I also have a computer science degree, and have programmed embedded systems in the past. If the head unit were designed/programmed properly, then a faulty peripheral should not be able to take down the head unit :frusty::frusty::frusty:

Honestly this wouldn't be anything more than a mere annoyance if simply turning the car off and on rebooted the system or there were any other reliable method to force it besides pulling the fuse or the battery cable.

Mine has done it a few times with nothing hooked up. I just wait it out (if i'm driving somewhere quick and it's DOA) usually by the time i go into a store or something it's back on and running.. You can eject the CD and it will play when you put it back in, the screen is very dark/dim but thats about it. I tired to take it to ford but they want me to re-create the issue and usually by the time i go there and it sits it's back up and running. so meh. I'm going to upgrade to another nav unit here soon anyways either a TomTop or the modidication one

It would be nice if the "power" button were a hard power button and not a soft switch

every now and then the audio system gets retarded and needs the fuse pulled
