VERY LONG STORY.
A simple visit to a Ford dealership to look at 3 GT Premium Mustangs w/Recaro Leather seats in mid-June, turned into a sales guy becoming belligerent and shoving me when I went to report his behavior to his managers. Reported him, during a phone call to Ford Marketing at the end of June.
Over a month later, after it became clear they were not going to be able to do business on my terms (after practically begging them), I contacted the replacement salesman to gratuitously thank (for being a "great" salesman) and brief him that I had gone with another dealer for my Mustang order.
Despite that, I made it clear that I will still recommend him to family, friends, and colleagues, plus consider him on any future business. He responded bitterly and then after some thinking, I decided that I had to set him straight on his drivel. Clearly the dealer has issues with quality personnel, that guarantees many potential Mustang buyers will be turned off.
I expect that most users won't bother to respond or even read my story, but I would appreciate any feedback on this, even in the midst of 2018 mania.
Thanks.
Back in mid-June, I had been seriously studying between several choices, what I wanted as my next vehicle purchase. Among that was a new or used S550 GT Premium in DIB, Ingot, Black, or Magnetic. I had skipped getting a 2015 Mustang, when I bought a new Focus ST in late 2014 by accident (on impulse).
All of my local dealers within my current city, didn't have a GT Premium with 401A and Recaro Leather Bucket seats. I felt that before even committing to a Mustang, I needed to know if the seats were to my liking and finding one like that was like finding a needle in a haystack. (I am not spending over $35-40k on a car that doesn't fully meet my wants, as otherwise I clearly don't need it and my ST can stay.)
So, in a nearby town about 25-30 minutes away, their sole Ford dealer had 3 GT Premiums with Recaro Leather Buckets. Problem is, they didn't have the Performance Package and only 1 of the Recaro Mustangs had 401A.
In essence, they didn't have the exact car I wanted. While browsing their online inventory one afternoon (sent to them via Ford BYO), I was accosted by a chat representative. Usually, I ignore these things, but this time I decided to oblige her. While I was typing in reply, then she mysteriously transferred me to some male representative.
While asking him questions and explaining my choices, I got transferred to "Matt" that worked at another store within the same dealership, for a DIFFERENT brand, but for the Internet Sales department. It was very disjointed and a little frustrating.
Matt asked if I could stop in immediately, told him it may not be possible, as I saw that I'd be very tied up that day. He in turn, made the rather immature comment on their customer chat messaging system.
t, "Yeah, I am too busy anyway and don't have enough time too, come in when I have time to see you.", as if it was some personal matter.
To my surprise hours later, my schedule cleared up. A relative of mine and a friend decided last minute in the late evening, to head to this dealership (25-30 minutes away North), since my schedule was now free and was also considering a Mustang.
En route, I politely sent "Matt" a text saying that I was on my way and if he was still available. Just to extend him the courtesy and in the event they found what I wanted, that he'd get credit for the sale.
"Matt" sent me a stupid message, saying his department and the dealership were about to close. Particularly this, "honestly it is too late for us to do anything for you tonight, especially regarding banks". I was driving, unable to respond and a bit taken aback. They close at 9:00pm, not the time he gave me. It was 6-7ish when I was headed there.
Quickly he said in another text, "You need to set up a better time to come visit." I had never in all of my vehicle shopping, seen such a text. I just ignored him and decided I would work with someone else most likely, but also not to get too sensitive and brush it off.
He called me when I was driving (SYNC bluetooth alert), I didn't answer due to close proximity and now questioning his usefulness/dedication. After getting there and entering the showroom, I spoke to a seemingly jovial salesman ("Tim") that extended his hand out to my group and me, who then chatted with us for awhile, while the receptionist overhead me mention "Matt" and quietly called "Matt" as a favor without asking me if I wanted to still work with him (not her fault).
"Tim" went on his way to his desk after a long chat and "Matt" showed up from the another showroom. Upon seeing and meeting me, I started to read that "Matt" had a look of arrogant displeasure on his face, that I began to quietly realize I might end up having to dismiss him and work with another salesperson down the road, if he didn't straighten himself out.
I politely introduced myself and my company to him, despite him being rather short and claiming, "well we can't do anything today". I had to assert myself a little in the politest way possible, reiterating that I wanted to study the exact 3 vehicles I was interested in now, parked outside across the roadway from the showroom entry doors.
We walked to the cars and discussed a few things, while he got the key to the closest match as I requested. I told my cousin and his girlfriend, that I would definitely be demanding a new salesperson soon, as it was very clear "Matt" was not serious about working with me for his own poor reasons/values.
He returned and then I sat in the car, made it clear again to him what I wanted option-wise (excluding PP) and explained more to him, as he continued to give unwarranted condescending responses. Inside, I was shaking my head about his behavior, waiting until it became intolerable.
After several minutes of discussion, when I then started to bring out my driver's license and hand it to him, he then pushed my hand away and started bellowing out to me, that "No, you are not driving this car! Come back another day!" The sun hadn't even gone down yet.
I calmly told him, "Well I am here now, I don't really have time to be going back and forth between two cities, are you willing to work with me or not?" Shocked by this behavior (which I saw coming), I simply made it clear that he was not serious about his job nor competent at it, thus I'd find someone else that is. He angrily demanded and violently grabbed the key fob out of my hand, saying "You get out of MY car and leave MY dealership or I'll call the COPS!" "Matt" positioned himself, as if he was ready for a physical fight. Bear in mind, that I am in my 20s and this is some 35-40ish guy, quite portly and taller.
I told him, "This is not your car nor is this your dealership, you are just a salesman as your name isn't on the dealership nor property", walked right past him (not engaging his brutish behavior) and then walked stone cold with great self-assurance into the showroom, with him following behind like he wanted to stop me and knock me over onto the ground.
As I entered the dealer and proceeded to the manager's desk (walking briskly), he tried to beat me to it, inadvertently (or intentionally) shoved me, and then yelled out a bunch of blatantly dishonest BS in a childish manner to them (talking over me), as I calmly told them in an exasperated manner, that I had never been treated this way in my years of car shopping and that I needed them to rectify this by finding someone else willing to do the job.
Matt stormed out after angrily yelling out a bunch of lies to the personnel present about me (after I had put him in his place) and then stormed off back to another showroom, saying "suit yourselves!". The manager and other Ford sales representatives gave sincere apologies on their behalf, saying I didn't deserve it and they will make it up to me. Camera footage would easily disprove his claims and likely reinforce mine. Body language gives that away very easily.
"Tim" was assigned to work with me and they essentially were waiting on me hand and foot for the rest of the evening-night at the dealer. My initial problem with "Tim" was that he over-explained things, as if I was an illiterate buying a poverty-spec Fiesta. He also took way too much time bringing up irrelevant things, while I politely nodded or faked being amazed.
I already knew who designed the S550, before anyone else outside of Ford did back in early 2013. I leaked that info, plus highlighted early efforts on the 2018 refresh back in 2014.
I know this car inside out, yet these salesman do not get it. I looked past that, feeling he was trying to be his best and helpful, by me being patient and polite (to the chagrin/impatience of my cousin).
After a test drive in the GT Premium that came closest to what I liked and getting the necessary feel for the Recaros, I started zeroing in on specific options I required for me to sign. The only thing I was open to was color choice and lack of Adaptive Cruise. PP, 401A manual, Recaro, and NAV had to be there. Otherwise, my ST can stay or a base GT would do.
His manager and "Tim" said they would try to locate what I wanted and if not, would order one and require a $1,000 deposit. I told them I'd be in touch and left, knowing I'd have to make some requests later on and in a rush to go a relative's house.
The next day on 6/21, "Tim" showed me some potential dealer trades via text, but many of them didn't meet my requirements. I tried to see if "Tim" could take $500 instead $1,000, he said it was non-negotiable to the dealer owner.
As a younger individual, I have to not reached my peak earning years like my parents, therefore I will try to save money where I can. The remaining dealers that didn't have what I wanted to test drive, started making more sense instantly when willing to take just $500 for a deposit.
I quietly bowed out and just let him send me texts, while reviewing vehicle choices and Ford dealer choices locally (as in same city/state). So, in turn I would give polite responses emphasizing I was in the process of making decisions on my next vehicle (looking at other choices with trucks/muscle cars) and wanted a major loan account to close (paid-off, processing), before proceeding with a new loan.
I spent the rest of the week of June 18-24th, looking at various choices and then finally narrowed it down to a Mustang on Sunday, the 25th. On Saturday late evening, I had looked at an Ecoboost in-depth, with my younger cousin at a local dealer, plus Lexus and FCA prior to that.
In haste with regards to the June 30th deadline and with bad advice from my younger cousin, I quickly placed an order on Monday, June 26th for a new GT Premium PP with everything at this local dealer, about 25 minutes from my house. (Had thrown away $40k on them earlier on, diff brand)
The salesman tried to get TT&L as a down payment, I refused in bemusement, citing that it was excessive and he needed to speak to his manager again, as I was not getting a GT350 (they have 2016 GT350s on the floor, due to ADM:doh
.
After some back and forth (left my method of payment at home), we "completed the order" and he said everything was good to go, they would give me more information later. No DORA nor VOC, just a small paper receipt from their register.
On the afternoon of June 29th, I got a very annoying message from "Tim" in the bordering city and state, saying "Order was rejected due to no more 5.0 engines for the 2017 cycle." Also said his manager wanted to know if I wanted to do an end of the month deal on a GT.
I did not disclose that I ordered my car elsewhere, but asked "Tim" that how did he place an order for me already, when I never even attempted to do that with them. I wondered if had access to my order info at the local dealer. "Tim" told me "when he last texted", which was June 23rd.
Quickly I became very pissed, feeling he was trying to get me into a dealer lot GT and because they didn't have allocation, lie to me. On the other hand, I was worried he might be onto something and that I needed to check with every possible entity.
I quietly got in touch with my actual salesman in tandem and then he gave me a vague response, that everything was fine and don't worry. The next day 6/30, I called the dealer, to ensure that if they couldn't do it, they needed to tell the truth now. Between Ford Marketing and my local dealer, I got a myriad of answers on this tidbit regarding outright discontinuation of MY2017 GTs.
That I needed to wait until "next week" to fully know (manager of sales guy), Ford isn't building anymore 2017s (FM Rep 1), it's not showing up yet/don't worry (FM Rep 2), inventory manager is on vacation and won't be back until next week (bitchy dealer recep.).
My sales guy finally said that my order was a special exception, but it will be done and his inventory manager will be able to tell me more "when he gets back". Also said, that his sales manager took the inventory manager's place, to get the order in. (Inventory manager said very recently, he processed my order himself on 6/30:tsk
In the midst of this, while talking to Ford Marketing Rep 2, I told him about my experience at the bordering state dealership and documented "Matt's" behavior. I then called that other dealer the next week and spoke directly to the manager, who told me the same thing as "Tim" regarding MY2017 V8s. I said I'll be in touch.
After all I went through last month, it was very clear "Tim" wasn't lying and at the very least, I'd send him recommendations to anyone in the marketplace. However, we could not have ever done business regarding my Mustang, as long as they could not give me the car I wanted.
I took time out the other day, to politely let him know I was no longer interested, by including a snapshot of my order info, so that I would not keep him hanging. He in turn gave me an entitled, BS response not to send anyone in his direction and that he could have "helped me". In fact, he'll work with people who respect his time, unlike me.
Caught off guard by this silly response, in turn, I made it very clear that I gave him and his team, chance after chance. Unfortunately, they couldn't make it happen for me, so I took my business elsewhere. I said to him respecting his time was far from the issue, as I am the customer and as long as he couldn't get what I wanted for a rather expensive non-luxury brand vehicle, he could not expect me to buy from them when a better opportunity existed.
That he could have pressured his bosses to get my business and he cannot blame a customer for being smart and doing what was best for them. I also pointed out he certainly won't be getting any recommendations to the many affluent people I know, including family members that would consider a high grade F-Series, Expedition, Explorer, or a Lincoln.
I concluded it with how I was surprised at his poor conduct, as it felt like deja vu, since his colleague shoved me on camera over 1 month earlier. Said if I was only just a sale to him, then he needed to do ANYTHING to make that sale happen and not just spam me with useless information, then get pissed because my terms weren't met. Made it very clear that he chose to assume I was an idiot based on appearances, he was very mistaken and had lessons to learn.
In turn, he called me arrogant and to lose his number, as he didn't "have time for my arrogance". I called the dealership and demanded to speak to that sales manager of his regarding the matter. The manager apologized, while I gave my own "BS" reasons, that my poor treatment could result in them losing my business on other vehicles and servicing.
I feel like reporting this to Ford Corporate. From being yelled at and shoved for asking to test drive a vehicle, then getting this attitude from another sales guy, something needs to be nipped in the bud.
I have already dealt with BS at my closest Ford dealer where I service my vehicles (7 minutes away), where a bro-douche sales guy pawned me off onto someone else, because he wasn't getting a sale with what they had on the lot and a few rude service advisers on my Focus.
Now the current one where my order 794A is placed, are where they cannot make up their minds on anything and often dishonest, already screwed me out of $40k on a ***** vehicle from another brand.
The only remaining one (farthest away in town), only had the issue with timing (waiting on Ford/Flat Rock), as I was trying to see what they could do with their dealer-ordered allotment. However, the ordering dealer I had walked away from, managed to complete my order after me canceling, so whomever gave me what I wanted in the form of a secured order, got my business.
For someone that is a very loyal Ford customer, what I have been through has been displeasing and would make me go to another brand entirely, if not for products like the ST, RS, Mustang, and Raptor vehicles, that appeal to my inner enthusiast.
FCA has courted with me with excellent offers on the Challenger, Charger, and Wrangler, that I had to look past them to get this car, a reason I didn't even mentally myself commit to a Mustang until June 25th.
Even now though, I am already questioning again if I want to keep this order, due to my less than satisfactory experience with Ford on looking for a new car and poor treatment by their service center nearest to me.
In some ways I will chalk it up to local sentiments, versus other municipalities and regions of the U.S. that are eons better in professionalism. I will no longer put up with sales personnel thinking it is their right to walk all over a customer, because in their puny brains, not everyone is worthy of the same respect as a customer.
