Backup camera intermittently doesn't work

My car is the 300A (base interior) so I only have the small screen, not the larger touch screen that most of you guys probably have. Not sure if that is relevant or not

Anyway...probably half the time my backup camera doesn't work. It just doesn't come on....I get a black screen. When this happens I have taken the car in and out of reverse, even tried putting it back in gear, moving gorwRd a few feet, and then backing up again. Once it decides it's not going to work...there's no reasoning with it. I wonder if the car doesn't realize it's in reverse sometimes? But I'm not sure how to verify this. Ive never driven the car at night do I can't even tell if the backup light is working from the driver seat in the daytime.

I don't have much faith in service departments, so I'm not going to take the car into the dealer for a minor inconvenience like this, just wondering if any of you guys had experienced similar and may know of a fix?

does it make a difference if you turn your car off and back on again ? it's best to at least verify the backup light works
