I need some help from the experts.

I purchased a low mile '16 GT California Special. The options are the 3.55 gears, NAV and Ruby Red. That's it. The original owner installed a CAI and American Racing cat back exhaust system.

When putting the car in reverse, the back up camera guidelines are missing. I took the car in to the dealer today for a camera recalibration and the car wouldn't take the reprogramming. I get the car back from the tech and he mentioned that there are 3 different camera types. No guidelines, fixed parking guidelines and the moving guidelines. I find it hard to believe that a $41k Mustang Premium would come with the base back up camera. Is there any way to know what camera came with this car?

The tech stated that the only way to know is to get Ford to pull the build codes for this car and that will let them know what camera I have.

Any advice or suggestions from other owners is appreciated.

I'm guessing what the tech is saying, is that Ford sourced their back-up cameras from multiple different sources, and some had the lines and some didn't..........and yours doesn't have them.

What type of Mustang you have doesn't matter, it's just what Ford was getting to the production line at the time.

ok. Not sure if it makes sense to pay $795 for Voice Activated Navigation and not get all of the features that another person paying the same $795 in 2016 would get. If they advertise a product, and describe it's features in the manuals and online, then they should all be equal, unless an update is present that "upgrades" newer models. You should not get a downgraded product in some cars for the same money.

Just a guess but I think the nicer camera comes with the reversing sensor system for $300.

You should have the lines, all mustangs do if the correct camera was installed. Most likely it was replaced at some point in time, and it was never initialized.

There is a procedure the dealer has to follow to initialize the camera in IDS, which should correct the issue, but I was able to do the same using FORScan and triggering a BCM reinitialize, which cleared the backup camera init code and returned the guide lines to the screen.

Are you aware that the lines can be turned on and off via the main menu?

See the parking aids area of the owner guide page 151.

Camera System Settings
To access any of the rear view camera
system settings, make the following
selections in the multifunctional display
when the transmission is not in reverse (R):
Main Menu
Settings
Vehicle
Camera Settings
Enhanced Park Aids or Park Pilot
Selectable settings for this feature are ON
and OFF.
The system uses red, yellow and green
highlights that appear on top of the video
image when any of the sensing systems
detect an object.
Vehicles equipped with touchscreen
The system will provide an image of your
vehicle and the sensor zones. The zones
will highlight green, yellow and red when
the parking aid sensors detect an object in
the coverage area.
The coverage area is up to 6 ft (1.8 m) from
the rear bumper. There is decreased
coverage area at the outer corners of the
bumper.
E130178
For additional information of the zone
coverage and the rear sensing system. See
Principle of Operation (page 147).
Rear Camera Delay
Selectable settings for this feature are ON
and OFF.
The default setting for the rear camera
delay is OFF.
When shifting the transmission out of
reverse (R) and into any gear other than
park (P), the camera image remains in the
display until:
• Your vehicle speed sufficiently
increases.
• You shift your vehicle into park (P).
• You pull the hand brake on vehicles
with a manual transmission.

I went through this same thing. I've also posted about it for other people that had similar problems. It has nothing to do with the camera itself. It's all software based.

I have a 15' Premium GT with the large screen (Sync 2). I had all of the different lines. At one point while my car was in the body shop for being rear ended, they reset the battery or something. When I got the car back, the camera worked in that I could see what was behind me, but there were no more guidelines. The settings in the system showed that the guidelines should be on, they just weren't. Additionally, I noticed that the little magnifying button to change the view, was also missing.

Long story short, the body shop tried everything. They tried using their fancy reprogramming tool, they even replaced the actual camera (I still have my original one which worked fine). They could not fix it.

I ended up taking it to the dealer. It took them 3 days to fix. I'm not familiar with all of the details and systems involved but basically, I was told that they needed to somehow connect my car with Ford's network in order to reprogram the software. For whatever reason, they had a lot of trouble connecting which is why it took so long. Finally, on the 3rd day, they were able to connect and reinstall everything and it worked again. Has been fine ever since.

This is exactly what I have now. I show that the grid lines should be on, but there is nothing there. I also don't have the magnifying button. The dealer tried to reprogram it today and it didn't work. I don't know what the procedure was, but he mentioned something about disconnecting the battery with the door open, to drain all capacitors, then drive the car at 20mph, etc, etc. He told me that he followed all documented reprogramming options and it didn't take any of them.

Thanks for the responses that confirmed my belief that all Mustangs should have the guidelines. I'll probably need to drop the car off and let them contact Ford.

Try a different dealership. Gary Yeoman's Ford in Daytona seem like they know what they're doing.

Mine occasionally loses the lines then they come back...there are several Ford bulletins regarding these cameras, I think the info to fix it there if you can find a dealer willing to spend 15 minutes to scan tech titles.

Hit me up if you continue to have issues, I am in the area and can probably get you taken care of with FORScan.

Thanks for the offer solodogg. I may take you up on that. I found that the dealership scratched my front fender and never put the clips back in the battery cover. I'm thinking I will not be going back to Prestige Ford in Mt Dora. Now I have to see if I can fix the fender!

On my 2016, the lines go away when the trunk is popped open. Could it be that your car thinks the trunk is open?

I had a new rear decklid panel installed with camera (warranty) on my 2015 GT and the guide lines disappeared. After much discussion with the multiple service reps at my local dealership about what the cause could be, one of the service managers joins the conversation and quickly says "give me your keys, the camera firmware has to be flashed". He was back with my car in 15 minutes. Problem solved. I would go to a different dealership.
