I'm going to try auto crossing the mustang not this weekend but the following. I've autocrossed before in an auto car but never in a manual.

I have a PP and I think I may be able to do the whole course in second gear... no?

What about driving modes? sport plus with stiff steering?

Any help would is appreciated

Thanks guys

It's hard to say on the gearing thing because it depends on the course... Usually and most likely 2nd gear.

Turn Advance Trac and traction control off (simply putting it in "race mode" doesn't do this). Whether in "race mode" (or is it "track mode"?) or all "off", I belive the steering automatically sets to stiff.

The way the S550 rear suspension is, even stock, the car will catch itself way better than the solid axle versions.

You're saying all the nannies set to off? Sounds scary

2nd gear (Should be able to get to 60-62mph max)...do all nannies off..trust me i know it is scary but you will learn the car better. Do a couple runs at a slower pace with them off at first to see how it handles. I was worried at first also but then realized for autox having them off made me really control the car and it was a lot more fun. This is only my 2nd season of autox and first one with the mustang just fyi

I tried it in my PP EB a couple of months ago for the first time. First run or two was in S+ mode, then in Track mode for the third and final (which of course was slowest because I had too much speed on the "fast" part of the course and clobbered a bunch of cones. That probably had more to do with reckless enthusiasm than anything else!).

I could feel the car sliding around, but it felt completely controllable and was just fun as hell. I did not turn the traction nannies all the way off. Second and third seemed to be the right gears to be in once I was rolling.

It is pretty easy to control. I drive daily in a Track mode, on auto-x definitely turn off advancetrack - hold traction control switch for 7-8 seconds. You'll be fine. I am yet to have to shift into 3rd (did 4 events so far) but hit rev limiter at least twice.

Been autoxing 15 years in just about everything you can imagine. For someone new-ish, you could try leaving the nannies on until you notice them and then do what KZ suggested and turn them off. Gearing is driver and course dependent. Faster courses will require 3rd. My only autox in a S550 I used third twice but ended up bouncing off the limiter instead due to the way the braking was for the downshift made it slower according to the clock/solostorm.

You ought to be able to run most courses in 2nd gear unless you're running on a wide-open lot and the course designer also drives a larger high-HP car (rather than a Miata). I've autocrossed off and on locally/regionally since the 1970's in a variety of cars, and there's only been a couple of times where I needed 3rd.

Take traction control completely off.

What you do with stability control can't be my decision because I've never competitively autocrossed a car that had it . . . but I do suggest running with its intervention minimized or eliminated sooner rather than later. Relying on it (even subconsciously) will teach you bad habits and keep you from learning on a near-instinctive level proper correction techniques.
