Yeah, in reality I'm kind of in the same place. I've had my fun a quarter mile at a time in the past. While I may still take my S550 to the strip a couple times just to shake it down and see what it can do, I don't plan to do a whole lot of drag racing with it. I'm getting the Performance Package too, and that doesn't really lend itself well to drag racing anyway.

Ever since I took my prior 09 GT to a Test and Tune in Manassas VA I've Never wanted to touch the strip again. I was lined up next to an 01 Camaro SS. I had the better launch and was ahead. I guess he was upset by that so while he shifted into 2nd he generated massive wheel spin and panicked passing behind me by inchs and slamming into the concrete. I was done after that lol.....At least I won...

I am one of the 99% who can launch more consistently with an auto than with a manual.
The typical race that I used to have back 10 years ago when I was still drag racing for fun and vehicle abuse was that I would get about a 1-2 car length advantage over a manual driver off the line and hold it thru first gear. What happens after that depends on how good the manual person is at shifting the gears of if they smoked their tires off the line.
A "WELL DRIVEN" race with a manual car is really nice to watch but when you hear the sound of a missed shift and the engine bumping off the rev limiter it always makes me cringe.
The guys who are getting the best 0-60 times with a manual are normally abusing the crap out of the clutch off the line.
Not something you want to spend your hard earned money on if you are looking to buy a used car.

Yeah, I appreciate watching a really skilled manual driver take his/her car down the track much more than an auto car, even though the auto might E/T a bit faster. And yes, a missed shift sounds awful, but a truly skilled driver usually won't do that as long as their tranny/shifter is operating properly.

I'm happily forgoing the likely possibility of having slightly faster, more consistent acceleration and potentially better fuel economy that comes with an auto by opting for the three-pedal 'box. I used to be in the opposite camp and optioned my current 335i with an auto for the purpose of convenience and slightly better straight line numbers.
I've learned two things:
1) the fractional number difference is negligible and really won't matter to me because I'm not racing for competitive purposes.
2) it's boring as all get out. The paddles get boring quickly, and I use the console shifter 99% of the time when I'm driving, even during rush (at least it's the proper push-for-down, pull-for-up pattern). I just can't live with another one of these for the next 5+ years.
The only autos that would interest me are the latest iterations if the ZF 8HP 8-speed or a decent dual clutch unit, preferably a PDK or M DKG. Definitely the GT3 PDK, which has that crazy clutch-kick feature... ooh yeah.
Slightly more relevant to the main topic: I'm sure that the auto will be faster given all things equal. And more fuel efficient.

Generally the perf. pkg. was not available on the 2015 automatic. However, the 50 year limited edition (not the appearance package, but the actual 50 yr. limited edition) did come with the performance package.
Having taken my 50 yr. LE auto down the track against a few manuals I can say it was much more consistent and won, EVERYtime
Hope you found the perfect pony and enjoy it as much as I do mine
