The limit is 90 in Vic I think.

I was under the impression it was 90 in NSW too, this is good news if 96 is in fact current!

Is the 2007 document the current document? (I actually could not find the accepted DB level in the link above)

Yes that's the current document. I may have the decibels wrong but the other information is definitely correct and current.

VICTORIA:

I'm reading Vic limit to be 95. ie 90 as delivered new, then 95 thereafter (not more than +5dBA from when certified, ie when new), making different standards for stock delivered exhausts from factory vs fitments of an aftermarket.

Here's the actual regulations from vic:

PART 3—VEHICLE STANDARDS FOR NOISE EMISSIONS
10 Noise from motor vehicles certified in accordance
with ADR 83/00
For the purposes of sections 48B and 48D(3A) of
the Act, the prescribed standard for a motor
vehicle certified in accordance with ADR 83/00 is
that the vehicle must not emit noise exceeding, by
more than 5 dB(A), the stationary noise level
established for that vehicle when it was certified.
11 Noise from passenger vehicles not certified in
accordance with ADR 83/00
For the purposes of sections 48B and 48D(3A) of
the Act, the prescribed standard for a passenger
vehicle not certified in accordance with
ADR 83/00 that has a date of manufacture
specified in column 1 of the following Table is
that the passenger vehicle must not emit noise
exceeding the corresponding level specified in
column 2 of that Table.
Table
Column 1 Column 2
Date of manufacture Noise level (dB(A))
Before 1 November 1983 96
On or after 1 November 1983 90

Which means, when the car was first certified to come into Australia a stock reading was made, it cannot go 5 dB's above that reading, so that pretty much makes all aftermarket exhausts not 'legal'

corsa extreme is 98 decibels :(
That's the US measurement. We've already had aussierob do a test on his corsa sport using Aus testing procedure, and the sport came out to 100dB

Us measure at 10 feet (3 metres) and we measure at half a metre

I had a Mazda 3 MPS that had an exhaust that measured 105db. I never got pulled over but I did drive sensibly whenever police were near by, didnt go hard in the street I lived etc.

Selling a car with that sort of volume is a PITA though.

Clearly you haven't heard an MPS with an AM exhaust.
Hard to hear whats in my rear vision mirror

4 cylinders will never sound as good as V8s when it comes to exhausts I love the induction sound on a large turbo 4 cylinder but I haven't heard an exhaust I love.

Ide argue something like a WRX and the MPS has a better exhaust note than something like a C63 which I drove for a few hours. Dont think its as simple as V8 good, 4 Cyl bad. V8s do start with the upper hand for sure.

A C63 has one of the best sound stock exhausts period, it is up there with the Maserati Gran Turismo MC Stradale, Jaguar F type in my opinion.
