This small panel sits to the right of the steering column, near the driver's right knee; it has a vent and, when I popped it off to do the install of base radio replacement, it has a wire harness inside.

But no obvious purpose?

So on my base model it serves no purpose? Cause there's still a vent there. No clue what, if anything, is behind it though.
I know I have no automatic climate control though.

It's the air temperature sensor for your automatic climate control.

Costs too much to retool the molding.

Well yes, I was mainly wondering if the sensor itself is still in there. If I was to swap in a MFT with the auto climate, would it work properly?
If it does not have automatic climate control, there is no reason to have the sensor.
On some vehicles, the HVAC box is not the same between the auto and manual climate control so it's not as simple as swapping the controls.

Fart detector. Measures methane and H2S and sets AC to outside air as needed.
Now, THAT would be a truly useful feature. then, a fan would come on under the seat and vent the fumes out of the car.

Do you think they cling more to cloth or leather?

I like BMWs have air quality sensors so the it enables recirculation when then sensor sees pollution.
I have to manually turn on recirculation every time I am following some stinky car with a bad cat.
