I have an auto, only mod is a MAPerformace CAI. It seems to happen more when I'm ending a merge onto the interstate highway, after speeding up to get ahead of the incoming traffic. My passenger said it sounds like the car is giggling/quick barking sound

Sounds like the BOV. Sometimes it just stutters instead of just one solid whoosh. Much prefer a good'ol mechanical one.

Maybe a catback or downpipe is in order to relieve some back pressure

Good advice guys. This car seems to want mods and upgrades. :D

The bark happens sometimes, not always. It barks in 1 out of 10 times, otherwise it's just the whoosh sound when I let off the idle at boost.

I second this. I installed my MAP cai last weekend and noticed that when I am shifting faster/harder the sound is a shorter, quicker sound that sounds like what you are describing. When I am just casually driving it gives a full whoosh.

Ohh yea if it's what dragon and Jim are describing mine does that too. Although I think it might have stopped after getting a tune. Or I just got used to it and don't notice it now

I tried this morning to get the bark sound but couldn't. In reality, if its detrimental to the turbo shaft or any other engine component, I'm gonna try to avoid it as much as I can.

I didn't find any EBM clips of the sound but this one sounds like what my mustang does, at 0.31 second mark:

What the hell is turbo barking?

I have been driving modified turbo 4's continiously for the last 30 years and have never heard a sound I would call barking.

I've seen the term used with diesel trucks. I believe they may be talking about compressor surge, sounds the same to me anyway.
