picked up car from tuner today
I noticed that the air intake temp was reading 120-140 all the way home. actual air temp was 77 degrees.

#1 possible the gauge or sensor is bad?

#2 would this affect the cars performance?

What kit do you have? Allot of tunes are setup that as IATs increase past a certain threshold, timing is pulled from the tune. Excessive heat, lower power, reduced timing lower power.

I have a Paxton and it cruises around at about 5-7 degrees over ambient. But under WOT it will hit 140+ IATs at 15#s of boost. That is usually in a 90+ degree day.

Yes, this is normal, this reading is from the factory MAF sensor. Your IAT2 is not shown. The temp is not perfectly accurate as some of this is from the electric fans and the sample rate is extremely slow. So it will raise then decrease fast.

That is your inlet air temp reading from the MAF pre compressor, should be somewhere nere the air box. Don't be concerned with this to much becuase it will heat soak when the car is sitting in traffic, but will go down to 10 degrees above ambient when the car is cruising for a while.

The Roush does have an AIT sensor reading post compressor called AIT2, however only the PCM can read it and and it will adjust timing and such accordingly.
