Apparently the DoT is starting a 7 month trial of "acoustic cameras" to catch noisy vehicles. Supposedly aimed at motorbikes (and maybe Mamils with loud voices?) but Chris Grayling's comment about "boy racers IN souped up vehicles" suggests the net may be cast wider. After all, how are they going to catch bikes when they have no front plates and most street-racers have tiny, half-hidden rear plates? So lower the dB threshold and catch cars instead...

Between Ford build quality, poor customer service and now the fun-Police i'm seriously beginning to wonder if its all worth it.

Surely they will be listed on Waze etc so when you are alerted to one just put the car in neutral and glide past!

It's all part of the conditioning for electric/automated cars. Reduce sound, slowly take away driver input and make the roads as congested as possible so no one wants to drive.

I've got a Moto Guzzi California and the Mustang GT and both have exhausts but they're not crazy loud, obnoxious exhausts.

I'd hope the threshold is put somewhere at the obnoxious end of the scale with an appropriate db cutoff.

After all, I'm sure we've all been awakened by those same exhausts ... it's all about moderation. A happy medium that doesn't cross the line.

Yep as long as the threshold is below the obnoxious end of the scale then Im okay with it. Some exhausts just sound loud and sh*te, so if they're banned im not too bothered

You'll be fine, you're intelligent enough to know where the cameras are and "cruise" past

some how as i've built my exhaust it goes almost perfectly silent at 85mph in 6th so they can have 2 choices quiet and speeding or noisy and sticking the the speed limit. i'm only able for sticking to one of the 2 stupid rules

I think they will find it hard to prove a certain noise came from a specific number plate in traffic

The whole thing holds about as much water as a Boris Johnson policy. The original article gave the impression it was a country-lane kind of thing but also talked about lack of people to enforce it - fixed cameras probably wouldn't generate enough money, mobile cameras need plod to operate them. And if they're mobile, how the hell do you calibrate them, etc? I know, have a cop on an noisy bike riding up and down the road to set the baseline at 6am before the bikers hit the road :)

So... According to the govt web-site, the maximum noise level permitted since 2016 is 74dB...and according to their data the GT is certified at...74dB! Presumably that's in quiet mode, or AM need to get a new noise meter as I'm sure they were reading well into the 80s and above with stock active exhaust! And of course at what revs, etc. Limit will be gradually reduced to 68dB by 2016.
