AC compressor clutch cycles on/off when AC button off

So from my understanding AC clutch cycling on/off is normal when AC button is on but in this case it was not and the system was actually heating. Defrost was not on either. Only the face level vents were on. Is there any magic in these auto climate systems or is something off?

they cycle with the heat on to keep the compressor oiled.
