Cool story. I'd much rather have that car with a side oiler in it rather than a 428.

In '68 the 427 was being phased out in favor of the 428CJ, which was cheaper to produce. The '68 Mercury Cougar GT-E (the holy grail of Cougardom, IMO) was available with the side-oiler, they made 357 of them before running out of the 427s and the remainder of cars built with that package got 428s. Most likely the engine in that Shelby came out of a Cougar, or was a service replacement engine.

I'd rather have the 427 also. Bigger bore, shorter stroke, more of a free revving engine.
