Hey all, has anyone put 285/40/18 tires on a 18x9" rim? I think the recommended max is 275/40/18 but was wondering if anyone has done this?

That’s pretty wide for a 9” wheel, it’ll bulge a bit and you’ll have less than optimal performance. If it’s outside the manufacturer’s recommended wheel width, some shops won’t install them either. Optimal size for a 9” wheel from a performance standpoint would be 255. You could also run 265. If you want 285’s, you‘re better off going to a 10” wheel.

It's been done many times, however it's no ideal for several reasons.

Steering will not be as crisp, and you're basically wasting money as you won't get anymore contact patch to the ground than a 265 tire.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I bracket race on the weekends. I normally run a 275/40/18 on my 9 inch rim. All I was looking for was a little more tire height while still be safe because I'm gonna upgrade to lower gears. Looks like this might solve the problem.

9.5 wide wheel minimum for the tire to fit correctly.

Discount tire shows 9 to 11.5 rim for this tire. For road racing I would want a wider rim but for drag racing it is fine on a 9 inch.

RIM WIDTH RANGE 9.0" - 11.5"

If you’re drag racing wouldn’t you want more sidewall anyways? Why not go to a 275/45 or similar?
