I'm in this boat too. I'm looking to replace my rears (my fronts have a lot of life left which are the Pirelli stockers). My mustang is a GT PP. I wanted to go wider on the rears as i am thinking wider contact patch.

I would have thought going from 275/40-19 to a 285/35 or 295/35 would be a good plus 0.

I have 275/40/19 Michelin Pilot Super Sport on the front (305/35/19 in the back). Could not be happier. They are amazing! The diameter of a 275/40/19 set-up is 27.7". This is identical to your OEM wheels and tires on the PP so there is no re calibration of the speedometer required.

I have 285/35/19 Continental Extreme Contact DW on my sve drifts. Installed them this weekend on my car. Needs a drop though now.

It's all tradeoffs.
I toyed with 285/35/19 but dropped it for a lot of reasons. Ugly wheel gap and lowered car all things equal as diameter is 26.9 inch as opposed to 27.8 inch with 275/40/19. To remove gap you need to further lower the car. To me all this lowering is not worth it - driving in the city, gas stations, driveway etc becomes a major PITA. Also, makes gearing of PP even shorter.
A little bit of wheel gap doesn't look bad at all, and IMO looks much better than truck-like tire sidewall to fill the gap. (mostly relative to the front.) I think 285/35/19 has the perfect amount of sidewall in terms of looks. I don't like too thick and I hate rubber band tires, and to my eyes the 285/35 strikes the right balance. However, I have no problems with a thicker sidewall if its in the rear only, as long as you don't go too thick up front.

Stangman04 - Looks good and will look perfect when you lower it.

Thanks...I do worry also about the lowering effect. Can you share photos of your setup?

Left side is +10mm from "0 OEM" and right side is -10mm:
http://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wheel1=275-40-19X10ET39&wheel2=285-35-19X10ET39&fcl=50mm&wcl=30mm&scl=50mm

Also, the 285 is closer to "measure width" for the 10" rim, and provides a bit more curb protection. It kinda depends on tire choices. For example, if you wanted Conti you would find it in 285, but not 275.

HTH.

My car is a 2012, but I can later when I get home, sure. Don't have access to my pics here at work (Photobucket is blocked)

Thanks, brother! And yes, I drive the car year round, its my DD...I have 3 sets of wheels/tires. We had a bad winter last year and I got through it on these 19X9.5 RTR's and 275/40 Conti DWS
