After studying the pictures provided by american muscle and looking and how these are attached to the 2018 mustangs...it looks like these could be modified slightly to fit those 2015 - 17 mustangs with base bumpers.

Thoughts? Should I give this a try and be a guinea pig for everyone?

Think it might be more straightforward to get the Ikon one for base models and screw it in, right? Look doesn't appear much different.

Maybe, but the problem with Ikon is that their products are made out of polypropylene and not ABS plastic, which means they are much thinner, easier to scuff, and fitment is not necessarily the best. I just with the RTR part was not so expensive...$300 for two pieces of plastic is really going off the deep end...at least with my Sync 3 modification (which was close to $1,000 in parts) there was a real function change...same with my C/S splitter, which not only changed the appearance of the car, but increased downforce on the front end (at least it seems to do that after 70mph compared to the tiny front lip that comes standard on our cars). And on top of that, the C/S splitter is less money and is a HUGE piece.

The Ikon diffuser is ABS, the Ikon premium bumper is PP...just for clarification. I will probably go that route as I don't want to pay over $600 for the "real" bumper cover, just have to buy a separate valence which is about $140.
Ikon Bumper cover $275.99
Ikon Diffuser $102.28
Valence $140
Total: $518.27
Still cheaper than the OEM bumper cover by itself.

Looks can be deceiving. The whole rear bumper has been redesigned and has different sizes, attachment points etc... for the 2018 when compared to the 15-17s. You would most likely have to purchase a 2018 bumper in order to get it to work. That said, if you are quite handy at custom mods, it may be possible. I would just hate to butcher a good bumper for something that may or may not fit, especially knowing that there are in fact other ways to make it fit.
