So now that the performance gauntlet has been thrown down by the Camaro (still needs some help in the looks department :D) I wanted to get a discussion going on what you think Ford needs to do in 2017 MY to stay competitive.

Here is some of the things i would like to see.
1. Direct Injection - this is mostly for performance reasons in what i would expect would be needed to bump the 5.0 to the needed 450hp.
2. Higher compression - again for performance increase and allowed by the DI above (both of these were added to the new LT1 found in the camaro)
3. Mag Ride - Since this would have been two years now on the gt350 only I would think it wouldn't be that big of a stretch to see this on the GT model (remember the 2SS is like 42k base so the mustang has some room to work with from a price standpoint)
4. Weight reduction - I know I know this is where it becomes a pipe dream, but who knows maybe they use that huge price gap to close the weight gap where it could really count.

Again there is quite the price gap between the camaro and the GT maybe they could do something like GM and provide none of these options on the base but then allow them all on the PP or something similar.

EDIT: oh yeah and a dual mode exhaust! (thanks ender)

Screw DI unless it has a secondary injection system.

If my base pp car was 3500 lbs and had 475 hp and 420 tq with a 7500 rpm redline it would be the perfect car.

I would hope for maybe 2018 or 19. 2017 specs I'm sure are already set in stone.

from a what's good for Ford pov. I would like them to leave the drive line alone.

gain performance by finding a way to shed 400 pounds or more.

2018 do a model refresh with new styling cues and 450 hp and that 400 pounds less weight.

I would add a dual mode exhaust option for the GT to your wishlist.

I could only hope they would implement some of this into 2017, but more than likely they'll wait for a bigger reveal in 2018.

I, too, think we'll not see any changes until the '18MY

Here's my wish list:

  • 460hp Coyote (Probably via DI or similar)
  • 10-speed auto option
  • MagneRide
  • Dual-mode exhaust
  • PP option on the auto
  • 100-200lb weight reduction with more aluminium or similar lightweight
    materials
  • Refreshed fascias front and rear, including head/tail lamps

PP in an auto
Magneride
Enhanced PP package with slightly improved performance
More aggressive sounding exhaust option similar to the deeper rumble you got on the S197 simply by putting GT500 mufflers on it
California Special leather seats or similar available on a GT
Smooth hood option for the GT like on an Ecoboost model
An SVO option for the Ecoboost that rivals the GT's performance like it did back in the 80's

Rumor in Canada is that they will be doing away with the 5.0, and going with a twin turbo v6. This may be common knowledge, or not...it's what I heard from an engineer at ford.

Those were my thoughts too, and I think they're pretty accurate for updates over the next couple of years - what I'm not sure about is whether they'll introduce a few of these for '17, just to keep things interesting.

I could see maybe a small visual refresh (maybe a partial GT350 look-alike, rolled into the PP) and the mag suspension for '17, then for '18 a more major design update, the new tranny (maybe even a new manual), revised Coyote, new materials (for reduced weight) - and the introduction of the GT500 with the new design :headbang:

I care about infotainment
  • 20-30 more Ib-ft
  • FRPP track pack components move into the standard PP (or an "enhanced PP" package that comes straight from the factory; to better compete with 1LE)
  • Weight reduction; 100-200 pounds
  • Updated front fascia; change the headlights specifically
  • Ditch the MT-82 once and for all.

Yes, please. The manual transmission is the one huge weak point in this car. If the #1 thing people recommend is modifying the clutch and transmission as soon as you buy the car, it's a problem.

I would also add Liquid Blue to the list :D Though it seems that probably won't happen but I'd at least like a lighter blue to choose from than DIB (like Hyper Blue on the Camaro or B5 Blue on the Challenger).
