Recently I got the MSD 2 Step Rev limiter for my 2017 Mustang GT. I hooked everything up how the diagram showed and the engine runs normally. At first I had the wiring harness backwards which made the engine feel sputtery and it threw a CEL. So I flipped the harness and engine feels smooth now (hallelujah!)

The main problem I am having is with the switch wire to activate the MSD module. Now I did everything it says by seeing if the LED on the device is on while the ignition is on (not with the engine running) then it shows that it is wired up correctly in the engine bay. My problem is, is that I have a manual transmission and I’m trying to tap the activation wire to the clutch switch. I don’t know which wire it is because both on the clutch switch itself don’t seem to work. The black/white (I think that’s what the color is, it’s too small for my eyes lol) when the engine is running doesn’t seem to turn the LED on when I’m fully on the clutch like it’s supposed to. The other wire, the blue wire, always seems to keep the light on which is causing the 2 step to always be on which throws the CEL.

Any help from someone knowledgeable or with a 2017 that had this same problem? Would love to get this figured out and back on the road. I will put a picture of the diagram from the instructions with this post for reference.

EDIT: So I figured it out. I attached the blue wire from the MSD into the blue wire from the clutch switch (since it’s the ground wire in my car) and everything is working perfectly now except I still have the CEL on. Will that go away on it’s own?

Did the CEL ever go away? I'm looking into picking one up as well. I've been told that using it can cause misfire codes hence the CEL and that it's nothing to worry about. I've also been told that a tuner can help prevent that CEL from coming up again. (Not too sure how accurate this information is)

The CEL ended up going away and I got an nGauge to show me the codes. It was a P0304 which is a Cylinder 4 misfire code and 4 other codes that popped up all for Catalyst Efficiency System below threshold. I took it off because the engine felt kinda shaky but not too bad.

I bought the 2 step to burn away the catalytic converters away. I haven’t done much to the car except the catback borla atak exhaust and the tuner. But saying that I feel like something has happened to the cats on the car as my exhaust doesn’t sound loud anymore and sounds kind of muffled. There’s no tone in the sound and it just sounds like air. I’ve checked my tips by holding my hand behind both left and right tips just to feel if any air is getting out and they were.

I drive a manual transmission and I have had one time while driving that my engine completely cut off while I was moving when I put the car in neutral. I don’t know what caused the problem because when that happened I had taken the 2 step off before that happened and am still confused on what’s happening with the car.

I would say be wary about installing it and making sure everything runs okay before keeping it on and all that.

Is your car still running funny as of right now even with the MSD off? What's your AFR's like?

car is probably running bad because you messed the cats up running the 2 step. After my 2 step install Lund had to adjust the misfire logic so no misfire codes and adjust the cat efficiency codes because you are dumping fuel into the exhaust, of course it is going to read rich and not efficient. A tuner can take care of the codes. The 2 step wont effect the way the engine runs unless its active or you installed it wrong. And you should never ever ever run a 2 step with cats. its possible its broke them up some and clogged up. you may need to remove them and chisel them out or just do cat deletes

Did Lund charge you extra for adjusting the misfire logic? I'm currently tuned by Lund as well.

yes......... no......... lol if you are with in your 3 month revision then it doesnt cost a thing. I was not, but needed some revisions due to us not having e85 here, I paid the 50$ revision fee and they gave me a new e65r tune, got rid of my rev hang, then Alex noticed i had a bad o2 that was going in and out. we replaced that. i then got the N2MB and they gave me revisions for the misfire logic. then i was getting the o2 sensor out of range and running rich. they sent me a revision for that. once all that was fixed the revised all my tunes. flex, e65, e85, and just to make sure a tune with 91 and everything turned on to pass emissions here in Vegas when the time comes in a couple years. just reply to your email and speak to them about it. really are a group of great guys.

Would that explain why the engine shutoff and has the exhaust muffled with its sound?

if those cats melted or broke apart yes..

here is when i first got my 2step. had no idea this was happening. when we found out went from e83 to e65. it was really rich, but its violent in a hot exhaust dumping all that fuel

here you can see what happens when a engine runs a little rich. it doesnt take long to get that cat red hot. keep dumping fuel in there and it will melt. Check around the 3 min mark. Ive seen cats blow out easily when people start running 2 steps. or cars that get boosted and start running a little rich.

I am trying to install the 2 step on my 2017 gt

did u have to flip the coil connections Or did u put them in the orientation that they supposedly go on?

there’s a video of a guy on YouTube flipping the connections which is confusing me at this point. Thanks!
