Is there any plug-in/flash option to update my touch screen center console so it isn't slow and has more of a modern appearance for the screen/settings etc without getting a new console all together.

All you can really do is a master reset then load the newest Sync 2 updates. The next level is Sync 3 which I believe requires a new APIM and screen. That upgrade can be found all over, even Amazon, in the $750 range. The newest of the new is Sync 4A but I have no idea what it takes to update 4 or 4A. Probably different hardware again...

Ok thank you, I just didn't want to get like a telsa version big ass screen thing. I just don't like how big and bulky it is. Would rather stick to what's currently in there, just updated hardware.

2016 should have Sync 3? I think only 2015 had Sync 2. They are all slow, sorry about that. Even the new units that moved to 3.4 and newer hardware are slower than you'd like.

I think you're right. I'm not sure why but I thought it was 2 until the '18 model year. But checking, it was 3 on the '16s.
So, OP, you should be able to update to 3.4 which I think is the latest version. I don't know if that will help with the reasons you want to upgrade though.
It looks like 4 went onto the '19 or '20 mustang but I haven't seen a upgrade/swap from 3 to 4. From what I've read it looks like you would have to change out hardware and somehow update software. I've seen that some have done it in the F150 but I haven't seen it anywhere else.

I think '24 gets 4.x to work with all the dash doodads. '18+ got a different unit that had bigger memory needed for 3.4. I added a nav system to my '17 that was from an earlier unit so I was limited to <3.4 on it else it risked performance issues. You are correct though, using Sync 2 in only one year didn't make any sense, you'd think with a whole new platform in the S550 they would have used the more recent system. Reminds me of those poor souls that bought the facelift '10 Mustang just to get the weird little last mod motor they made for one year only when the upcoming, new coyote was all anybody could talk about for the next year.

I upgraded my 2016 GT350 tech package to Sync 3.4 including new maps using Sync3 updater from Cyan Labs at no cost. Lots of you tube videos on how to do this. Then replaced the rear USB in the center console with an apple carplay compatible one from FORD for about $90. I'm not sure you can take it any further without changing hardware.
